| | | Sushi is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, don't worry about it. There are plenty of other healthy foods to eat.
If you want to improve the taste, then try it with ginger and wasabi. There are tremendous variations in quality. The consistency of the rice is also very important.
I eat "real" sushi occasionally, but I'd rather eat cooked crab, shrimp, or eel with my rice. I especially like California rolls (rice, cucumber, avocado, and cooked crab meat wrapped in nori). I prefer it to be room temperature (most restaurants I've been to serve it cold). I dip it in soy sauce with plenty of wasabi, and I almost always eat a bit of ginger before and after each bite. I don't mind if it's wrapped "inside out", but I don't like it when it is rolled in sesame seeds. If the rice is overcooked or dried out from sitting on a buffet table, I won't touch it. |

The fact that you can arrange the seedweed to look like hair on a plate, and make a variety of faces? | I was around ten years old when my Dad introduced to me sashimi (tuna). He just came from a long stay in Japan and wanted to share his new favorite dish.
I still remember taking that first sashimi. The coldness seems to be just right, and the texture was smooth. At first I thought that it was like swallowing cold bubble gum without the stickiness. I have never given much thought about the fact that it was raw. The sauce was just heavenly and I was never the same again.
Sushi just came in a few servings later. I love California maki! Tekka maki though is my usual fare. |

Her mother was Japanese and was more than happy to make a traditional dinner anytime she knew (and sometimes didn't know) I was coming over. I think she was homesick but whatever the reason I certainly didn't mind.
As far as variety and taste of food goes, the only other event that compares is when I dated a girl with an Italian mother. I went from 127 lbs. to 143 lbs. in about a month.

| | | Personally I love sushi, when I cant taste it. The trick is to cover it in horseradish wasabi, cover so that you cant see the sushi, then apply a second coating. Some call this crazy, others call it stupid, for me, its just a great taste, and a great way to clear my sinuses for a day or so. |

| | My first ever experience with sushi was... traumatic. I can't remember what the hell it was I tried, but it was the single most disgusting thing I've ever eaten.
On the other hand, I think I was about 8 back then I haven't tried it since
I have a friend who absolutely LOVES the stuff... his ramblings have made me want to try it again, but I can't afford it |

| | I suspect sushi tends to be one of those things you either *really* love... or *really* dislike.
I've rarely met anyone who has a neutral reaction to it.
One of the more amusing sushi-related incidents I remember involved a German couple whom we knew. The woman was a medical student and provided us with extremely long lectures on the dangers of worms in sushi.
The same woman loved pork tartar..... (i.e raw, ground pork combined with beaten egg and seasonings), and smoked liked a stack

The taste of the raw fish itself is nothing special, it just gives me an excuse to consume massive amounts of wasabi, with some added flavor, and clear at my sinuses/get that special feeling. |

I sorta dislike it, as in, what's the big deal with having this raw fish on top of some rice, with a nice piece of seaweed wrapped around the thing like a bandaid? But then, I haven't tried wasabi yet, and if that makes a big difference, perhaps I should. Though I'm right off soy sauce, due to its extremely high salt content. My heart specialist gets an angry look on her face whenever the word "salt" is mentioned in her presence. I don't wish to incur her wrath. It's tough enough doing so with my wife, who is a non-practicing RN but retains the RN Stare for important occasions.

@DW: Not every rule, just most of them.
Also, Ive noticed more 'Americanized' versions of sushi, recently I have seen cream cheese sushi with salmon, rice, and cream cheese, all wrapped up its nice sea weed blanket. Any one noticed any other nontraditional varieties, the cream cheese was actually fairly decent...
Didnt we have a Japanese member around here? I think it was a she, and her started with an 'M', be interesting to get feedback from a more local source. |

RNs (or Registered Nurses, as the acronym goes in the US) don't lose their licenses when they take up another line of work. They may or may not have to take additional course work if they choose to resume practicing later, depending upon where they get jobs, but they never resign from being nurses, per se.
I'm taking your question seriously, because if I had to consider it as an attempt at humor I would be forced to kill you. Quote: |

| Yes, and you're thinking of Minerva. I believe she's busy at the moment.

I think what set phreddie off was your use of the term "RN stare" which does sound a bit as a superpower... But then again trying to understand phreddie's thought processes is a difficult and perilous thing... sorry DW for this bit of spam, just trying to save phreddie from the righteous wrath of the Gods |

| I'd like to think that we're helping to mold the youth of today into the anarchists of tomorrow. But I'm sure you know that an RN stare amounts to a superpower. I'm only able to resist because of my own superpower, the inability to concentrate upon anything for more than 1.5 seconds at a time. If I were able to focus on her stare, I'd probably be wimpering crabmeat by now, instead of a stalwart Babylonian god, famed of story, song, and many a lurid tale that, thank the gods, is no longer being repeated around the Mesopotamian basin.
Back to sushi. I was unaware of many things about the Swedes, but the facts that they preferred the doggy position and also loved sushi (not necessarily in tandem) go right to the top of that list. Is sushi becoming an international favorite, do you think?

That or they watch too much Discovery Channel. If you ever hear a Swede say 'Crikey!' we will know the answer.
As for sushi being an international favorite, it has been around for awhile. In my above post about nontraditional flavors, I have seen other international flavors. These may just be pieces of sushi being cooked up by American recipes, using local ingredients, but I think sushi is starting to gain popularity through out the world. |

| | Maybe sushi is going the way of the pizza and soon someone will put pineapple on it...
I mean that it will maybe loose it's japaneseness a bit and become more and more adapted at the local flavours and available foodstuffs.
EDIT: as for going international... two months before I left, a Sushi restaurant opened in Monrovia... (now I must say they have fair bit of good seafood in Liberia, so it is not that enormous a step). | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
