DIET - is it really just DIE with T(ea) ? (Spam on topic)

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen !

I've decided to reduce myself.

Honestly!

I saw some photos last weekend from my distant and chequered past, and discovered, that I once had about 80 kilograms/ 175 pounds on a height of 180 cm/ 5' ft. 9" in. . Now I'm going on 95 kg/ 210 pounds.

Don't get me wrong here....I was never a SKINNY person anyway, and I can live with the weight - it doesn't hurt after all....
..I DID put on the weight because I'm lazy...and I like to eat...but now I've started to grow a second chin (sp?) and I have decided to take steps....

So - after seeing the gorgeous, musceled hunk that I once was, I'm going on a diet. 15 kilos have to go.....(aprox. 33 pounds.).

Now it's YOUR turn:
Tell me about your experiences with "loosing weight" - tell me what you tried and of course if it WORKED.....or NOT .

AND IF you decide to give me advice - you're free to do so - just keep in mind that I'm a Winston Churchill fan : "No Sports !" .

So don't tell me to work out or take up this or that outdoor activity - because I won't. (ok - I might TRY to work out, but I'll give it up again after about 2 days...I KNOW how my mind works...)

I'm willing to live on stale water and dry bread if you tell me that it worked for you, but I won't sweat and pant my way through the neigbourhood....no way.... not until I've met at least ONE jogger that SMILES .

For the time being I've just reduced my food intake by half and started to drink water instead of other beverages (like anything containing huge amounts of sugar) ...now I'm waiting for (sensible) advice from my fellow SYMbionts...

No worries, just help to reduce Beldin !

Beldin

You've taken on a huge subject that cannot be adequately addressed in this short note. So let me simply cut to the chase. First, dieting as it is commonly done does not work. You cannot easily fool the body; if you could then weight management would be a lot less of a problem. Second, there is no way around the energy equation that dictates that calories in must be balanced with more calories used in order for weight to come off. Since you do not seem inclined to exercise this means you must begin to sensibly regulate what you put into your mouth. Depending how old you are, how disciplined you are, and how active you are in the rest of your life, this might be enough. For most people, it is not. For some of these people, weight management becomes a sad and frustrating roller coaster ride until they finally learn that exercise is indeed a critical component of not only weight management but anti-aging, cardiovascular health, psychoemotional resilience, stress management... but I digress. Third, you must always be aware that weight gain can be a sign of an underlying health disorder. Hypothyroidism comes readily to mind. Finally, weight management is not something to take lightly and I would ask you to please be very careful in basing your own program on the experiences of others. Seriously, dieting can hurt you. For example, improper dieting can lead to the following problems:

1. Decreased cellular energy
2. Increased oxidative stress
3. Impaired mitochondrial function
4. Altered gene expression, decreased amino acid transport, altered endocrine/hormone signaling, inappropriate immune response (particularly with faddish protein restrictions)
5. Dysbiosis
6. Systemic Toxicity (particularly in obese individuals on starvation diets)
7. Mood swings
8. Short-term memory deficits
9. Dysglycemia

In short, you are messing with the whole structure of the cellular machinery that makes your body and mind function. Please think about this. I am all for you being “reduced”, just not withered.

LMAO!

Hmmm...

All I have to do is eat light for a few days and I'll shed some pounds. However...

Horizontal sheet surfing burns calories very efficiently. http://216.40.249.192/mysmilies/cont...oo/smiliee.gif

No worries, (copyright Beldin)

Lightbulb Thantor's post is worth taking note...

...since he is a med doctor. (at least that's what he told me )

What about the 6 o'clock habit wherein no more food after that time till breakfast of the next day?

I'm not trying to be a smart @$$ here but I heard that sex is considered a good calorie burner.

Note: Beldin is a MARRIED man and my comment was solely for him.

Good luck Beldin!

I'm currently on a (sort off) diet too.
All I do is drink less cola and eat less candy.
I'm not sure if it will have any result at all! It's the idea that count right?

Something just occurred to me as I sat here, finishing off all that Halloween chocolate that was left in the basket...

Beldin, have you ever thought of eating organic?

For example, instead of buying your chicken already dead, how about grabbing a live one, and do the deed yourself? It's not that hard to get the hang of...at least that's what I heard.

That way, you'd burn calories on the way to making your meal. A little BFC (Beldin Fried Chicken) does the waist, and the heart, good.

You could also take up eating insects...http://www.tag-board.com/smilies/frog.gif they're organic too Low-calorie snack.

Just a few thoughts,
Chanak

Seriously, best of luck - can't give any real tips myself, cause I'm one of those people whose metabolism doesn't allow for any weight gain ...

Thank's @ Thantor - I was aware of some of your issues, but not all of them. My reasoning was thus - IF I kept on eating "normal" (=my usual food -> NO Junkfood, NO sweets, NO alcohol) only LESS of it (with extra fruit and vegetable added) - I'd still get my dose of Vitamins, minerals ...and so on - but I'd be bound to loose some weight in the long run.

I've read somewhere that any weight loss of MORE than 1-2 pounds per week is to quick and will return with reinforcements -( "Jojo-effect" ? ). Just remember - it took me YEARS to gain that weight - so I won't expect to loose it in 2 weeks...

@ the exercising: I just don't have the mindset needed for it. I get bored to easily, and I LIKE laying in bed with a good book much more than sweating... I can't get ANY motivation for it ...

@ Mah & Chan: I'm not married, but that doesn't keep me from "horizontal sheet surfing". Only - one man can only surf so much in a day.... ...

No worries, I'll be careful.

Beldin

Slimfast worked great for me. At my heaviest I was 6'1'' 215 lbs. Hardly obese, but I wanted to trim up. Daily exercise, watching what I ate, self-discipline, and Slimfast allowed me to shed about 20 pounds in about a month, giving me a nice firm body that I can be proud of when I look in the mirror. All it takes is hard work and some self-control (At least for me anyway. I'm still quite young so the pounds came off fast and easy).

Listen to Thantor, he's right.

If you don't like sports, try to workout at home... push ups, dips, chins and chrunches can be done home with some chairs and your own bodyweight... also try to eat real food, no snacks, about 4-5 times a day (not to much, though) so you keep your metabolism (sp?) going. Drink much (!!!) water and best of all, walk a little bit every day. About 30-40 minutes will do nicely.
When your strengh and condition's getting better you can go and workout at your local gym... it's the best training ever!

I know it's hard and no fun in the beginning, but you will feel so good about yourself later when you notice the improvements.

What have I done for diets? Good question...while I have said I would go on diets I never do. I hate exercising, but even worse, Id rather eat nothing at all rather then eating things I dont like, so sometimes I just fast for no reason. There have been a few days where I havent had anything to eat. There have been numerous days where Ive gone with only one meal. Most days I go with either 2 or 3 meals/day. Have I lost any weight? Good question. Nope. Mainly because I still dont move.

From what I've seen, a lot of diets actually work. The problem comes when the successful dieter reaches their goal without developing a reasonable post-diet program. It's not uncommon to see people boast of losing 75 pounds in 30-60 days--but how often do they keep this weight off?

So for what little it's worth, I suggest developing two plans: first, a safe diet program that will actually cut back your weight, and second, a post-dieting program that will keep it from rising again. Typically, this means exercising a good degree of will power, because most Western nations (and especially the US) are heavily into merchandising extremely bad fast foods as a substitute for real meals. You'll have to resist the appeal of endless fast food chains and their commercials wherever you go. Best start re-educating yourself, now.

My wife tried Weight Watchers for more than a decade. It worked for a while, then it failed. At best, she was holding her own weight, following their plan. At worst, she was gaining. I suspect a lack of energy for any exercise at the end of day didn't help. Weight Watchers is probably a good program for younger people with faster metabolisms.

Recently, she's started on the Zone Diet. It's kind of a safer, more intelligently applied version of Atkins, meaning that it cuts drastically down on carbohydrates without completely eliminating them, and rations out blocks of proteins, carbs and fats for each meal. It also offers very sensible advice (like making sure you never go five hours without a meal, aside for sleep), and tries to make weight loss no more than roughly 1 pound a week. Most doctors agree this is a reasonable amount to shoot for that won't dramatically impact your system for the worse.

The most efficient diet I can think of is actually a little painful, but besides that it works perfect: Lose your partner, if you have one.

I recently did it and lost at least 4 kg within two weeks since I just couldn't eat anything.

I guess that's just how nature brings you back in business - must be an ancient instinct which tries to make you look more crispy in order to attract a new partner ...
