| | ROFL!
When I first saw the headline I wasn't paying that much attention, and I didn't notice the comma, so I read:
"Man sought in burglaries during which man ate used computer"
The modern variant of Sword Swallowing?

The modern variant of Sword Swallowing? | I thought that...
Reminds me of that book 'Eats, Shoots & Leaves'. |

I think this is partly why I misinterpreted it the first time. The article is so poorly written that a completely misleading title seemed in keeping.
I was going to make mention of this in my first post, but then refrained for fear of coming across as a language Nazi...
I recognise that newspaper journalism has a different style to the standard English generally expected in university papers, but this piece is one of the worst I've seen in some time.
I hate seeing the English language mangled in print, it's one of my pet peeves

Yeah, I used to be a language (and punctuation) Nazi, but the time I have spent on forums has made me not only tolerant of sloppy English, but an emulator of it... because the printed word in forums is actually very close to speech, which is much more loosely constructed than the printed word (books, newspapers, etc).
I just can't stand sloppy language in print. |

| | I'm still a stickler for correct language in forums, I just can't handle constant mispelling, and mistakes... especially people talking in 'leet' .
And are we sure the article was written by an English-first language person... or at least someone who can actually speak English.
I have a feeling it was one or the other, in which case, it could explain the problems...

| | What is leet?
And I used to be the same about spelling and stuff, and always corrected people. They just loved me, LOLOL!
Now I'm more relaxed. |

| | Leet, or 1337, is an annoying 'language' sometimes used on the net.
It contains such things as writing O's as 0's, E's as 3's, and heaps of other stuff.
A few members here know it is my pet hate... and have shown their 'skill' in wielding it. I'm sure they could give you a good run down...
If they get angry at you spotting their mistakes, just let them know, 'I'm doing it for your benefit' .
Or you can tell them in private... so they can hide their shame away...

E.g. leet would become l33t.
And I don't know that much more about it, beyond being able to read a lot more of it than I could a few months ago (no, I don't use it). | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
