I'm very pleased it is strongly discouraged on this forum. If you do a search under leet, you'll find it has been discussed on various occasions.
I still am quite anal about language... 
I don't correct people though. I just cringe, twitch and wince uncontrollably

Summary of Origin: Some experienced guys (we can call them nerds) did like talking to each other, but not to less experienced users of certain communities. By encrypting their messages they were able to fool the newcomers for a while, but nowadays everybody who uses leet does so to ridicule the original leet community.
