As for my own beliefs?
I follow a polytheisitic religion which involves multiple planes or realities. I believe there is a plane which the Christians view as "Heaven" and a plane which they view as "Hell". I also believe in other planes. I have the belief there are places where I simply wouldn't want to be, ever, that are worse than "Hell" as well. I think that about covers the basis of this thread. Unless people have questions on all of that. Quote: |

| | | Magrus is correct. There are lands of the dead, symbolically located within or under the earth, which exist in Sumerian religion and predate Zoroastrianism. But Zoroaster may well have been the first religious prophet to preach of a moral place with a geographical location after one died--actually three in number, for those who were good, evil, or indeterminate during life. Gnosticism came out of some of this, and Christianity inherited a great deal (more than it ever liked to acknowledge) from Gnosticism.

| | Thank you for correcting that Fable. I don't recall anything being mentioned of Gnosticism though.

| | | A Dwarf's Secrets Revealed. Here's mine. Heaven: The land is a place of multiple adventurous (but not supremely dangerous/lethal) locales, filled with climbable, rugged mountains as wekk as multiple areas of dense polar and volcanic conditions, which people who traverse never risk injuring themselves by good luck and skill.
For bodies of water, there are clean lakes and seas worth swimming and sailing in.
In addition, there are meadows filled with beautiful, friendly animals (including cats, dogs, horses and songbirds), as well as wonderful houses filled with beautfiul, caring, and pleasureful women. Hell: A foul, seemingly decayed mess of a world, dotted here and there with toxic junkyards that house vile ruffians, and the land itself being home to every deadly (mostly venomous) creature alive; spiders, snakes, duckbilled platypuses (Yes, they are venomous!), and other lethal creatures.
For oceans, there are slimey seas that house dangerous aquatic creatures such as octopuses (yes that's the official plural term by a few notable sources), jellyfish, and others that harm humans.
The air always smells rotten, and it never dulls away over time.

This ascetic view appealed to early Christians (and until recently, godparents to Christian kids were supposed to help the child at baptism renounce "the world, the flesh, and the Devil."
Manicheanism was a lot closer to the Christian view of hell, however, and that evolved more or less simultaneously with Gnosticism, and shared at least a few of its features.

| | | Heaven is a (possibly mythical depending on your religious views) place where everyone is happy and content with their lives. Hell is the opposite and how I'd describe this planet half the time lol. |

| | Basically Heaven is where everyone is happy, think ten times the happiness when you fall in love.
Hell is where everyone is sad, think ten times the sadness of losing all your loved ones.

Seriously... I don't think there is a heaven or hell... Hell for me would be a world with only trance music though
