This past weekend I had a rare visit with my mom's extended family. Being a bunch of guys who see each other about once every five years, my cousins and I soon got talking about football, which of course, drove our spouses and other relatives nuts.
One of my cousins pointed out to me that my graduate alma mater's nickname, the Thundering Herd, is one of only a handful of colleges whose nickname doesn't end with the letter S. This sparked a 40-minute discussion as we tried to think of the others. Here's what we came up with:
Marshall Thundering Herd
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Tulane Green Wave
Alabama Crimson Tide
Illinois Fighting Illiani
Syracuse Orangemen
St. John's (NY) Red Storm
UMass Minutemen
Navy Midshipmen
NC State Wolfpack
I'm sure there are more, so does anyone know of any that we missed? What's everyone's favourite college nickname? Mine's the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.
Also, to keep this thread from dying too quickly, I'm opening this up for discussion about college football.
How about them BCS rankings?
Who's everyone got in the Notre Dame vs. Florida State game?

Well I despise Notre Dame for defeating my MSU Spartans and Air Force Falcons, but I say theyll beat FSU. But keep in mind, almost every college game I call out to the public, I end up losing. Last one I called-I said Iowa State was going to easily beat OU. Yeah right.
Well as far as your original question-Ill get back to you on that. Youve got me thinking. I can think of a couple Div I-AA teams...
Harvard Crimson
Furmin Flying Dutchmen
EDIT-And the list grows....
The North Texas Mean Green
Nevada Wolfpack

Who's everyone got in the Notre Dame vs. Florida State game? | If I remember correctly, last year OU was ranked first when the BCS came out....still Miami is second. (OU is making my team Alabama look even better. )
If I was betting money on the ND / FSU game ...I would put it on ND. (I will not bet and pull for FSU)

Notre Damn is going to win the game. FS isn't the same without Weinke.
I hate both teams. | | |

Furman is actually the Purple Paladins
Hofstra is the flying dutchmen
william and mary tribe
Dartmouth Big Green
Rhode Island College Anchormen (but they ain't D1)
Hobart Statesmen
Cornell Big Red
Stanford Cardinal
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Alverno Inferno (milwaukee, wi, again not D1)
Navy Midshipmen
and probably more
I'll take ND although I have no love for either. It should be a entertaining game from a neutral standpoint. Quote: |

Being a Tallahassee native, I am pulling for one side in this game (you guess which one), but Florida State hasn't been the same since Mark Richt left. They also don't have the kind of shut-down corners they're used to in Tallahassee, so their defense has to play more zone and blitz less, which takes them out of the scheme that has carried them for the last decade.
The defense has always been the key at FSU. While their offense racks up lots of points, it's usually against weak ACC opponents and their offensive players who have gone pro (Warrick Dunn, Peter Warrick, Brad Johnson, etc.) are often not as productive as their defensive players (Derrick Brooks, Peter Boulware, Deion Sanders, etc.) although there was a time in the not so distant past when Charlie Ward was the best quarterback in New York.
I think this game will be close, but I think that FSU will win for two reasons: 1) After losing to Louisville in a game they should have won and almost beating defending national champion Miami but for (another) errant field goal, the Noles have a chip on their shoulder and I think they'll take it out on the Irish, and 2) Doak Campbell Stadium is a tough place to play, especially for an offense that has struggled like Notre Dame's has this year.
Having said that, the Irish defense is doing an outstanding job and I'll bet they force Chris Rix to make a couple of bad decisions which could lose it for the Noles. The key for Notre Dame is to have an efficient offense that keeps the FSU defense on the field for a long time and to not turn the ball over.
