Clichés, 'tried and true'

I was just thinking about a situation a friend is in and the parallels to something I experienced some time ago. At that point an old cliché came to mind, and I reflected that sometimes clichés contain more than a little truth or wisdom. Yes, often they are annoying, and often they only promote stereotypes, but on occasion some of them have a certain ring of reality.

The particular cliché that came to my mind was

"Hindsight is always 20/20"

Perhaps not true 100% of the time, but certainly accurate in many circumstances.

More?

Not sure if its a cliche, but 'every cloud has a silver lining' has some truth to it as if you look hard enough there is quite often something good in a situation (not all the time though but a lot of the time).

I believe that Beauty really is in the eye of the Beholder.

I don't know if this sounds weird but what about this cliche, 'We may have lost the battle but we have not lost the war?' It does apply to real life like you may have beaten me in a game but I will be back to take revenge or something along the lines.

The second cliche that comes to mind is, 'Shoot first, ask questions later." It always happen when you're in a fight. Anyway, what's the point of querying the opponent in the middle of a fight?

EDIT: Have to change something as I've written something that doesn't make much sense just now.

Treason, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Not that that's a cliché, but it's just what I think whenever I see "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" now. Anyway, every silver lining has a cloud.

And Des, it's not about querying someone in the middle of a fight; it's because if you hesitate to ask what someone is doing, you're likely to get shot yourself. So, instead of asking questions, you shoot first. But you probably knew that.

I have about a million cliche quotes so I'll post two

Good is a point of view...

and of course my favorite quote of all time

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, Aphorism 146
German philosopher (1844 - 1900)

Both self-explanatory.

"Live and let live"

"What goes around comes around"

"S.O.L"

And the most annoying cliche that I simply can't stand; people see one damn Robin Williams movie and suddenly they're fluent in latin...

"Carpe Diem"

@ JI: If I recall that's quoted somehwere in Baldur's Gate... Aren't you trying a bit too hard?

Good point. Your reason sounds much better than mine, I admit.

Cease the day.

And one cliché that's tried and tested many times is "A friend in need is a friend indeed". Tacky but true.

Well, you have to concede, "Cease the Day," does have an interesting ring to it.

Hmm.. 'to halt the day'
Now if only that were possible on occasion

No good comes of it!

"On the day The Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to The Lord in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies"

That is not what we call a square go
