Celiz Cruz dies

Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa," has died. She was 78, and passed away at her home in New Jersey (of all places). She was a fantastic singer, and appeared on more than 70 albums.

Indeed fable, I read this tonight. She was a wonderful singer. Ironically enough, I also read compay segundo also passed away this weekend.

What a vital performer he was, too....! And Tito Puente died a few months back. Seems like so many of the legendary Salsa greats have died, this past year.

I must admit my knowledge of the cuban music scene isn't very deep. I've known of ceila cruz for a long time but I hadn't heard of compay until a couple of years ago while watching a program on pbs or bravo called the bueno vista social club.

It was a project I believe inspired by Ry Cooder to explore the roots of cuban music and deliver it to the masses. The final product was wonderful and since that time I've picked up a few bueno vista albums along with some other material of compay and Imbrahim Ferrar. It's great stuff and has a desired effect on the female persuasion.
