Now i haven't read many books other than the ones needed for term papers and class.
I was wonder what the books you guys most recommend to read.
Any category, though i would appreciate it they could be sci-fi or fantasy.
Need a huge list when i go shopping in B&N this summer!!!!

If you don't mind used books try http://abebooks.com (also very good for out of print books).
If you're interested in sci-fi, I'd recommend anything by Joe Haldeman (particularly "Forever War"), Ursula K. Le Guin or Frank Herbert's "Dune".

i have said this so many times i am a broken record.....Iain M Banks, the scope and magnitude of his writing is fantastic.....but then my Sci-Fi knowledge is not the greatest.
I tried to read Asimov and got bored, i tried 3001 by Arthur C Clarke and got bored, my pedigree in this area is not excessive, you could try Michael Moor****, he is/was brilliant and very inventive.
David Gemmell and David Eddings are good Fantasy writers.
Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy is very amusing.
(**** you can't very well go into a store and ask for some Michael Moor**** the word is c0ck sorry Mod's but there is a reason)

@Sleep: You certainly can walk into a bookstore and ask to see Moorc0ck... The problem is you have been going into pubs and asking to see Morec0ck

Incidentally and on topic (for once), I'd reccomend Lord of the Rings if you haven't already. I read it for the first time last year and am reading it again before the movie comes out. Defintely my choice for book of the century/millenia.

| | Stay away from George R.R.Martins!That's my advice. Do NOT read it. Ignore ALL recommendations. It's not any good. Stay away. Away, I tell you. Don't care if Robert Jordan recommends it. Take a look at HIS books and see how they change. See that? That's because he started to read A Song Of Ice And Fire. See that?
Scream if you hear the very name. Stay away from his books!
If you like "classic-style home-made easy-to-read fantasy", David Eddings (The Belgariad and then the Malloreon, then Belgarath the Sorcerer, and finally Polgara the Sorceress) is where you should start (it's alot better than it sounds). It isn't easy to read, but it's easy to read, so it's a good series. 
After that, read Terry Brook's Sword of Shannara series. All those books should keep you occupied for the rest of the summer.

One question for those who have read the Lord of the Rings series, how thick are the books? Because I bought it and it doesn't seem that good, compared to some other series that I have read - especially the Rift War Saga by Raymond E. Feist.
I went to the library and found that the books they have there is nearly twice as thick as the one I have at home. Can anyone please tell me the size of the books in the series? Thanks.

You must have a cut-up version sabre, mine is as thick as a bible and the print is small too!!!
Maybe you just read the first "book".
LOTR is actually 6 books usually split into 3 volumes (an erroneous 'trilogy'). Get an unabridged version, its over 1000 pages with appendices etc. Harper Collins do a good softback (kiss the spine goodbye though  ).

The best book i've read is "Melmoth the wanderer". It's the story of a man that sell his soul to the devil and, in order to regain his soul, must find another man that wants to sell his soul....not an easy thing to do. There's a deep analysis of the Inquisition and of life in the monastery....

Thanks Gruntboy, I'll try to find the unabridged version version then. No I did not just read the first book, I have all three at home, the total number of pages is about 1500, 500 pages per book.

Yes i have read LOTR, own it.
Lands of Shannara i have all 8 books, going to buy the 9th in the US.
but the others i will try them out.
