Twenty minutes ago a motorcyclist got pushed off the road by a truck, a ten minute walk away from my home. I just happened to pass by, so I dropped my bike (I had a flat tire earlier) and lifted his motor cycle from his injured leg. The guy got pushed off the road by a truck, but unfortunately for the police I didn't see it happen. I remember next to nothing about what us kids were taught in grammar school about EHBO (basic life support, a kind of diploma everyone can apply for without prior medical training - there may be a different word for it in English) but now I seriously consider taking the full course.

The guy was incredibly lucky by the way, as an ambulance just happened to drive by while I and another passerby were busy helping him. That particular road (next the the Galgenwaard stadium in Utrecht, for those of you who are in the know) is one of the main roads that go near one of the hospitals in town. They got him walking in like ten minutes. All I could remember was that he shouldn't try to stand up as quickly as he tried, pretty useless information when you've just been knocked flat on your back. He was OK though, and I kinda jokingly congratulated him for having worn his biker suit on such a particular hot day. You know how they can get sometimes.

Has anyone here ever been in a situation were you had to act quickly and assist someone who just had an accident? I managed to keep my cool, but I felt pretty bad afterward about not remembering anything to check him for fractures or anything. It wasn't necessary because those paramedics got there just in time, but still.

I think I have earned myself an early beer today.

Well sort of that kind of situation:

I was on the receiving end of care, a few years ago, I slid off the road in my truck
and did a 1 1/4 sideways flip down a ravine into a creek....
The first car that came along had a person trained in a first aid course. Thank goodness...
She helped me out of the truck, pulled me through the broken windshield out of the cold water and checked me out for serious injuries,
by that time another car showed up and an off-duty nurse finished giving me first aid till the police and medical showed up and gave me the usual ride to the hospital with all the sirens and lights...
of course I only remember bits and pieces of it. But I feel like I was very lucky that day...
it actually changed my life quite a bit...
After I was finally able to get home...I rearranged the priorities in my life and changed quite a few things...

Yeah, I had a scary experience similar to that several years ago. I was driving on very icy roads early in the morning for my day job when a woman passed me in a company van while we were ascending a fairly large hill (it had a railroad tunnel through it, for perspective). After making it around me, she lost control and rolled all the way down the hill. The van was on its side and smoking heavily by the time I reached the base of the hill on foot. The woman was stuck inside, bleeding profusely, and was hysterically beating on the windshield. I ended up having to climb up on the van's side and hoist her out through a broken side window.

Someone else who spotted the accident had already called 911, so it wasn't long before an ambulance showed up and took her to the nearest hospital. To this day I have no idea how hurt she was, so I can only hope everything turned out OK. Scary stuff, though.

Luckily no - cause I remember next to nothing from first aid anymore which I learned in the army.
Unfortunately - I'm usually on the receiving end instead though

And do "celebrate" with a beer Tricky - usually any help is better the no help, and it is not uncommon for people to just stand around and stare or walk on by

Wow man, that's heavy. You went and became a stunt driver?

But yeah, it's nice that something good came out of it. It's tough that so many people already go their entire lives without realizing how alive they are. Or how little.

Yeah I know what you mean. I know the guy was walking, but I am still wondering how badly he got crushed. It sort of showed his suit kept him together in places. And he could still barely talk when I finally took off.

...not quite a stunt driver, but it did make an impact on how I live my life and what I think is important in life.....

I can tell you, it was a helluva ride down the ravine... , what with windows breaking out, crashing into trees, and the rolling over...and it seemed like it took minutes to do, when I know it was over in seconds....
