RoTK got it's share of nominations huh?
Can't comment om it's chances of winning, as I haven't seen all the other movies, but I would guess it had a good chance in the Make-Up category...

Yeah, it got 12, but Cold Mountain has 13, guess it went down a lot better here than the US.

When the Oscar and Bafta nominations were released it occured to me that I have hardly seen any of these movies.

Cold Mountain never got a breakthrough here in Denmark (If it's even out yet). I actually have no idea what it's about... Guess marketing in DK isn't what it used to be.

Same here, shame on me I usually see at least all the best picture contenders. I meant to see Cold Mountain, but never got to it, I haven't had much time for seeing films recently. And when I do get to the cinema, I get cajoled into seeing silly things like School of Rock.

@Bloodmist Cold Mountain is an epic romance type mpvie set during the American civil war. It has an English director and star, I suppose that helped its profile over here. To be honest it doesn't appeal to me that much, but I suppose I will see it at some point.

I also mean to get around to seeing Big Fish... and 21 Grams, which hasn't even been released here yet. Probably Mystic River too.

I think LotR will scoop quite a lot of the awards though. The response to all three films in this country has been phenomenal. Fellowship got 13 nominations and won three, including best film and best director. Two Towers got 10 nominations, but only took visual effects and costume. I'd expect RotK to do as well.

At the start, I also noticed that. Last year, I'd seen all nominated feature films except for one, and this year I'd only seen like 5. But, movie freak that I am, I played some major catch-up, and now I'm counting the ones I haven't seen, as opposed to the ones I have.

Oscar nominees I've seen + my star rating (out of 4)
RoTK: 3 1/2 stars (all three films 4 stars)
Lost in Translation: 3 1/2 stars
Master and Commander: 4 stars
Mystic River: 4 stars
Seabiscuit: 2 1/2 stars
Pirates of The Carribean: 3 1/2 stars
House of Sand and Fog: 4 stars
Cold Mountain: 3 stars
Whale Rider: 3 1/2 stars
Something's Gotta Give: 3 stars
Last Samurai: 4 stars
Cidede De Deus (City of God): 4 stars (IMO best movie nominated)
Finding Nemo: 3 1/2 stars
A Mighty Wind: 3 stars
Capturing The Freedmans: 4 stars

Ones I've yet to see, and for sure will:
Big fish
Monster
In America
21 Grams
The Barbarians Invasions
The Fog of War
The Cooler
Pieces of April
Thirteen
American Splendor
Girl With The Pearl Earing
(all with three nominations or less)

2003 was a rather bad year for movies, as opposed to 2002, which was a fantastic one.
Last year, the acadamy nominated the merely good films from a great year, whereas this year they nominated the absolute best of a mediocre year, so they're making fantastic progress!

They made one huge blunder in commission- the absolute worst movie they nominated in all categories, Seabiscuit, is the worst choice the acadamy has made for best choice in years. Such a mediocre movie.
And they made one really huge blunder in omission- no Roger Deakins for cinematography for The House of Sand and Fog.
But otherwise- they were exceptionaly wise in not nominating Cold Mountain for best picture or director, and that is also surprising.
And I still think M&C should get best picture, costumes, sound and sound editing while RoTK should get best director, Visual effects, and score.

What time are they giving out the BAFTAs?

I really can't wait for the oscars- Billy Crystal is back, and him and composer Marc Shaiman (of Southpark the movie fame) are writing the songs, and Bruce Villanch is writing the opening stand up. Should be funny!

Morlock- who is gonna squeeze the award season for all it's got.

I'm amazed (pleasantly so) that Johnny Depp is getting recognized for his Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It's not the kind of role that is usually acknowledged.

This just in:

'Return of the King' Wins Five BAFTAs
LONDON - Fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" was named best film at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, while "Lost in Translation" co-stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson took the top acting honors.

"Return of the King" was nominated for 12 awards, known as BAFTAs, and won five: best picture, cinematography, adapted screenplay and special effects, as well as the film of the year award as voted by the public.

The third installment in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy also is nominated for 11 Academy Awards, which will be held Feb. 29.

"Return of the King" beat Anthony Minghella (news)'s Civil War saga "Cold Mountain," Sophia Coppola's quirky "Lost In Translation," Tim Burton's whimsical "Big Fish" and Peter Weir's seafaring saga "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" to take the best-film prize from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Weir won best director, and his naval adventure won four awards in all.

Renee Zellweger was named best supporting actress for "Cold Mountain." The civil war drama led the nominations with 13, but won only two awards — Zellweger's and best music.

The best supporting actor went to Bill Nighy as amiably dissolute rock star Billy Mack in the British romantic comedy "Love, Actually."

"Lost In Translation," only its young director's second feature, won three BAFTAs.

In taking the best actress award, 19-year-old Johansson beat her own performance in "Girl With a Pearl Earring," as well as Uma Thurman for "Kill Bill," Naomi Watts for "21 Grams" and Anne Reid for "The Mother."

Sean Penn also was nominated twice in the best-actor category — for "21 Grams" and "Mystic River" — but lost out to Murray's jet-lagged movie star adrift in Tokyo in the comedy of cultural dislocation.

"Girl With a Pearl Earring" was shut out the awards despite 10 nominations, as was Clint Eastwood's intense "Mystic River" — an early Oscar favorite — which had four nominations.

Several small, independent features were rewarded with prizes.

Sundance hit "The Station Agent" won the best screenplay award, while the prize for best British film went to "Touching the Void," Kevin Macdonald's powerful docudrama about an ill-fated mountaineering expedition.

A British film also won the award for best film not in the English language. Michael Winterbottom's "In This World," shot with amateur actors across two continents, follows two Afghan refugees on a perilous journey to seek asylum in Britain.

Emily Young, writer-director of "Kiss of Life," won a special achievement award for a first-time filmmaker.

The British awards have become an essential pre-Oscar stop since they were moved in 2000 to a February date preceding the Academy Awards.

The ceremony at a movie theater in London's Leicester Square was sprinkled with Hollywood stars, including Zellweger, Thurman, Penn, Johansson and Johnny Depp, who arrived late and made a last-minute dash up the red carpet.
