Shaw was one of the biggest band leaders of the swing era, as well as one of the leading swing clarinetists. Fabulously wealthy but disgusted with his fame and with the kind of swill that was selling, he quit bandleading, and ultimately stopped playing the clarinet. Just heard of his death on the BBC, where, not surprisingly, they referred to him as "Archie Shaw."
