A funny thing happened to me the other day: The "alternative rock" band Weezer came out with a video that made me reconsider my status. They threw together every internet-character from the start o f the net, and made a fantasic video out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muP9eH2p2PI The point is, I KNOW EVERY ONE OF THESE INTERNET CHARACTERS!... and my 28 year old friend, who has a degree in IT, doesn't know the Numa-Numa man. Who is the geek?

I don't understand anything. I watched the video, and I don't even know what you talking about. "Internet characters"? Are the characters depicted in the video typical internet stereotypes? Or are they related to stuff that has circulated on internet for a long time so "everybody" should be familiar with it? And what on earth is "numa-numa"? A traditional polynesian dish?
In any case, my conclusion is that both you and your IT-friend must be complete geeks.

Numa Numa is this fat kid with a big pair of headphones on that recorded himself doing an extremely embarrassing computer sit-down dance of the song "Numa Numa."

Other internet characters include Shocking Look Gopher, Leave Britney Alone girl, Chocolate Rain, The Diet Coke and Mentos experiment, and so on. Basically, all of them are people who recorded themselves doing stupid stuff and put it on youtube (Numa Numa appeared long before youtube actually, but it made it there nonetheless).

And I must be a geek too, I recognized every last character.

Now are the people playing their famous internet characters the original actual people who did it, or people who just look extremely like them?

It's the real people, which I find absolutely fascinating. the director actually asked them to do it, and the only one who said no was the Star Wars Kid. CE, these people are internet superstars. I can't believe you haven't seen at least one of them. They're everywhere!

I think Weezer already counts as geek-rock per definition. Do you wear glasses also?

And this finally proves that you are indeed a geek They're everywhere? I have certainly not seen any of them on Pubmed, on the websites of any of the scientific journals, on the major news networks or the Karolinska or UCLA websites.

The internet is a universe of it's own. How much more 'out' can you get?

Considerably more than the limited world that is the internet. For instance, you can travel the world and observe and interact with all aspects of other cultures and interact with people IRL which allows for contact at all levels.

Get out where? What I find disturbing is that a vid like the Numa Numa dance has been viewed 700 million times as of January 2008, and some people have managed to miss it. "Getting out" must mean living in a cave in Borneo.

Good, then you're only a geek, not a disturbed geek

What I find disturbing is not that DW, I and other people have managed to miss the Numa Numa dance, what I find disturbing is that so many think it's interesting enough to get 700 million views

Do you still question that you are a geek?
