| | | Aggressive drivers beware! I just read an article in todays issue of Florida Today, a county-wide newspaper in Brevard county Florida.
It looks like they may be finally cracking down on the terrible driving here thanks to one good samaritan with a little extra cash.
"Troopers target aggressive motorists
FHP will use unmarked car to find bad drivers
By J.D. Gallop
Florida Today
Tailgaters, chronic lane-hoppers and speeders beware: Florida Highway Patrol . . . in Brevard will have a new tool to catch you in the act.
It's an unmarked Mercury Marauder . . . officials say will be use to find and quickly catch aggressive driver.
The silver car is part of a statewide distribution of 18 Marauders. The Marauders -- equipped with high-tech video and audio equipment to record drivers and their reactions after a traffic stop -- cost $40,000 each and were donated by an anonymous Florida resident. . ."
I think this is great. The drving of people in Florida is terrible by US standards. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

| | So, essentially, people will now drive more safely around silver Mercury Marauders...
This reminds me of what happened in New Brunswick. A taxi company picked up a dozen squad cars from a Police auction, but neglected to change the paint scheme. Essentially, the company drove taxis that looked like cop cars, causing paranoia to reign supreme! A plot worthy of a Canadian Weasel... |

| | | That could be the effect, but this type of vehicle is VERY common on Florida's highways, it has the same body type as Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria, Impala SS, and Caprice Classic; some of our most popular models here. There are a lot of retirees in Florida and these are the body types they prefer. Also, I think the vehicles vary in color, the one in Bervard is silver, but they could even rotate them since it's a Statewide police organization.

| | | I didn't find the driving down in Florida that bad, on a US average. Of course, I've only lived in 8 states, but North Carolina, New Jersey, and especially Texas were worse. Floridians were just fast and a little--creative, on the road. Until you've gone out on a weekend night in Texas and come across a pickup truck, you don't the meaning of terror.

| | | Texas is pretty bad.. Especially in Dallas.. Recently things have gotten worse in Florida than they used to be. People routinely go over 100 on I-95... Tailgate with about 3 feet between vehicles at speeds over 80.. Orlando is terrible..

| | | Look, let's just admit that US drivers are bad in general, alright? Even the drivers in Burrsville, RI are awful, and that place is practically rural. Forget city drivers, those guys are enough to drive me to homocidal rage. Then again, European drivers really aren't THAT much better, although most of the time they can't do much harm because they're stuck in traffic, or else trying to squeeze their mini-car into a parking space half its size.

| | Never been to Norway, but I have been to Story City, Iowa, home of Scandanavian Days and about 500 people named Nelsen and Knutson. They all drive VERY slow.
France is really bad, haven't been to Italy, but I hear it's bad too.

| | Drivers in South America tend to believe that road laws are more in the way of guidelines, meant to be followed unless something important comes up--such as a pressing need to be somewhere now. And I'm not joking about this. I can't begin to tell you the number of times traffic in Venezuela pauses at a red light, looks to see if anybody's coming; and if they aren't, keeps right on going. Or how they'll climb onto a sidewalk if they need to turn right, cars are ahead of them, and they're momentarily stopped. And as for speed limits, well, don't make me laugh.
