Hmm, this reminds me (speaking of Christianity) of the teaching that the soul and body are integral to one another and ultimately inseperable...

Inseparable in life? There are quite a few fundamentalists and Protestants who would argue (vehemently) that the body and the soul are resurrected together after death, which leads to the interesting point of what souls eat and where they evacuate to keep the body functioning post-mortem; or assuming it doesn't function, why the body is necessary after death.

@Loner,
see, I figured it was just a question of terminology. ......

What happens if you don't believe in Souls????

I do not, Consciousness, yes, but I cannot grasp the concept of a soul. To me when you die, there is nothing.

@Fable: the resurrection of the body is a general Christian teaching. The idea is that the body will be reunited with the soul at some point. Re-living, if you will, the state we are in now, being creatures of both soul and body. HOWEVER -- what kind of body will it be? That is the question. I think the idea is, the resurrected body will reflect the condition of the soul. This is what Thomas Merton means when he says that everyone we encounter in this life will end up as either a being of light or a walking monstrosity...

It's not a matter of the body being necessary after death. It's the fact that we were created as creatures of both soul and body, that is our nature, and one without the other is incomplete. The body "post-mortem" functions through the power of God. It's not the same thing as now.

Um, does that address your comment?

An interesting point, but--if I may digress (and we all do, up here)--one that emphasizes the fact that god is forever, while permanant judgement is rendered upon extremely short-lived creatures. "What, you were tossed on the streets at the age of six, you scrounched your way around, killed a hooker at the age of fourteen, and died at the age of eighteen from AIDS-related illness? Too bad! You've just earned eternal damnation, and a body that will look like something out of David Lynch."

Of course, I'm exaggerating for effect, but not in the area where the person is concerned. Judgement rendered for 18 years, much less 80? What kind of judgement for eternity can be created out of that? Not a judgement that includes love, I think.

As to the body, itself: if it is to be resurrected along with the soul, according to Christian belief, than we're talking about something which exists now, during life, since resurrection refers to something being brought back which currently exists. Presumably, this means the physical body, since the soul-ful body is already accounted for. What other body might be meant?

The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

How can God be perfect if he made this dump pile of a planet?

Pretty shoddy workmanship if you ask me.

And he let his son die. And why would he let one of his former employees run around messing up his stuff (the devil )? God needs a lawyer and a palm pilot to help organise his life...

Predestination is a crock of ****, right up there with the idea that if you are a better Christian then you become richer in the secular world, complete and utter bol****s!
