Publisher says O.J. Simpson book 'his confession'

In a bizarre move his publisher says amounts to a confession, O.J. Simpson has written a book that speculates how, hypothetically, he could have killed his ex-wife and her friend.

The news was announced Tuesday night by Fox, which plans to televise an interview with the former football star acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Simpson Brown and her friend Ron Goldman.

It was one of the most publicized — and controversial — trials in recent history.

"O.J. Simpson, in his own words, tells for the first time how he would have committed the murders if he were the one responsible for the crimes," said Fox in a statement for If I Did It, Here's How It Happened, the name for the television interview to be broadcast in two parts on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29.

The book, If I Did It, will be released in two weeks and will be published by ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

"This is an historic case, and I consider this his confession," said publisher Judith Regan.

Denise Brown, sister of Simpson's slain ex-wife, said the publisher was "promoting the wrongdoing of criminals."

For the 12 years since his trial, Simpson has maintained his innocence and even suggested — to much ridicule — that he would track down the real killers himself.

Though acquitted of murder, Simpson was found liable for the deaths in a lawsuit filed by the Goldman family. He has yet to pay the $33.5 million US judgment in the case and continues to fight legal battles over the settlement.

Simpson's lawyer Yale Galanter said he did not learn about the book or interview until this week.

"The book was not done through our office," Galanter said. "I did not have anything to do with the negotiations of the book. This was strictly done between O.J. and others."

Others in the publishing community were critical of ReganBooks for agreeing to publish the book.

"This is not about being heard. This is about trying to cash in, in a pathetic way, on some notoriety," said Sara Nelson, editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly. "That a person keeps wanting to bring this up seems almost nutty to me."

At least one other network, NBC, turned down the interview. But Fox executive Mike Darnel told the New York Post the show, set to air at the end of sweeps week, will be a historic moment.

"This is an interview that no one thought would ever happen," said Darnel.

I am not surprised, the guy hasn't been in a movie since 1994. Those trials and the publicity were his bread and potatoes, so naturally he's trying to extend things a bit. That lot will do anything.

Just thinking about the amount of forest going to be destroyed and eventually wasted when it could be used for something else.

It isn't really surprising... but still nauseating...

Even if he actually is innocent it's utterly sickening, it just doesn't matter how you slice it, IMO.

What's really surprising is just how many people want to read the book.
I work in a library and the number of people coming in and putting it on reserve is quite a bit larger than I expected.

Doesn't the Goldman family have a claim on any money he makes? So I wonder why he would do this, if he won't profit from it. I think only his NFL pension is protected from the civil judgement, but I'm not sure.

I wish I could say I was surprised....
but I'm not.
I suspect it's the same sort of morbid fascination some people seem to have when they slow down to more easily view the carnage of an especially large and tragic road accident..

@Sparrow,
yes, I wondered that as well. And if all proceeds do actually go to the Goldman family, I can only assume it's solely a publicity stunt. I'm not sure if that makes it more, or less, repellent...

The fact of the matter is that nobody genuinely cares about the victim's fate except for, maybe, the family. 'Maybe' because once profit is involved, compassion goes right out of the door.
And since OJ hasn't been in a movie in over a decade, I don't see why people still care about him. He wasn't a great actor. Lesser known actors have done more important things in the last decade, and worse sentenced criminals have passed the media, unnoticed.

Are people so bored they don't even know how to spend their money? I can't sleep anymore. The stupid is too loud.

Who would say that though? To have gotten out of the trial and then to say, "Well I didn't kill her but, if I did this is how I would have done it?" It just seem twisted. Also, regardless of whether new evidence is presented in the book he can't be tried again because of double jeopardy laws.

Recent Update

After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said Monday that it has canceled the O.J. Simpson book and television special "If I Did It."

"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. "We are sorry for any pain that this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson."

LOL! He means a number of affiliates have refused to carry it, and advertisers have threatened to pull commercials because of it. That's been all over the news.

He can still have it printed if he truly wants to. One of the most popular "do it yourself" type printing things I know of is done locally here. You can go right to the website online, upload a file, select what you want done, and my former roommates ex-fiancee runs the high-tech printing press that will print off your lovely new books. I forgot the name of the website that uses the printing company, but there are some around. I am curious to see if he will. It doesn't take a lot of money to be able to print off a few hundred copies from there, and he surely has enough to do at least that if he wants to.

Yes, I have a feeling this is not the end of story. He will publish it somehow and it is going to be a bestseller. The media will take care of that.

@ fable

Considering that the statement comes from Murdoch... a person you can hardly accuse of having any noble principles... it is laughable indeed.
