101 years ago today, local time, (yesterday, by now, in Britain) the unsinkable Titanic hit an iceburg and sunk in the North Atlantic. Over 1500 people parished in the cold waters of the unforgiving Atlantic. Many things went wrong that night, many things people already know about, Im sure. Of course there was the lack of lifeboats, the complete panic, some faulty lock-tite doors, over confidence within the ships "unsinkable" name, unloading half-filled life rafts, blocking off emergency passageways for lower class passengers, among many other things.
The ship sank in 2-3 hours time (sorry, its been nearly 6 years since Ive seriously studied this particular sinking) and those hours are forever marked in history. We learned from the tragedy, and look back in horror and yet wonder at the ship and the night's/morning's happenings.
The Titanic peaqued my interest in sunken ships, and have since studied numerous other rather unknown/lesser known ship wrecks.
Incorporate any thoughts you'd like on the incident or repurcussions etc. (Just try to cut down on the Leo DiCaprio jokes   )
And I just thought Id let you guys know it is the anniversary of this tragedy. I, for one, find this stuff increadibly interesting.

| | Fourteen years before the sinking of the Titanic, Morgan Robertson's wrote a book called "Futility" . It was turned down by the publisher because the idea of a sea disaster in which an "unsinkable" ship went down was just to incredible to be commercially feasable. I have a copy of this book , which was published many years later, in my library. The similarities are uncanny.

But aslong as we are talking books....I am a follower of Robert Ballard, a marine version of Gwally, if you will, and he has found numerous ships including the Bismark, the Hood, PT 109, the Lusitania (though found previously), the Britannic (sister of the Titanic), the first sub to sink in WWI, and, of course the Titanic. And Ive read quite a few of his books, thats how I got into the Titanic, and then a slew of other ships I studied independently...
And of course there is the classic "A Night to Remember", which was worth a read 7 years ago, and I assume is still worth a read.
@dM Oh boy...here we go. I knew that damnable movie would forever be associated hand in hand with the Titanic. At many points it is historically accurate, but of course, the story itself is a HUGE segueway from the real stories.

I saw something on TV a few weeks ago about the fates of the many unnamed bodies that were recovered from the sea when the Titanic sunk.
One body was of a baby boy who for 100 years was believed to be (I think) the youngest son of a Swedish woman on the Titanic but when DNA tests were carried out on the descendants of her family, they found out it wasn't the case.
It was rather sad but eventually they found out the baby boy had been, in fact, Finnish and they managed to trace some of his family's decendants and they visited the grave in Canada where he had been buried unknown.
So there was a happy ending of a kind, I guess and at least the grave's occupant now has a name.
