UGO Epic RPG list

Top 11 Epic RPGs | UGO.com

If this is a double post, my apologies, but I haven't read a topic about it yet.
Personally, I'd replace Oblivion with Morrowind, and put Torment on 1 instead of BGII.
On the whole the order isn't that important, or at least very personal. I have to admit I agree with the list, at least on the games included.

As I've only played about half the games on the list it's difficult for me to critisize it too much. The only thing that puzzled me is why the worst of the Elder Scrolls game is on the list.

Well, people have their own views regarding what games they like but for me, I'm puzzled why Gothic was included in the list. I really detest the combat mechanics in that game and frankly, I'm surprised why the author didn't even bother to include how terrible it is. I'm starting to wonder whether they got the inspiration from Time Commando (given the similarity).

As for the rest, except Final Fantasy VI and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, I can't comment much as I've never played them before.

I really like the combat mechanics on Gothic and to be honest it is one of my favourite RPGs. As you said though, things like this are just personal preference and no two people are going to like exactly the same things

I agree with Des on the combat system of Gothic, but as a game, it's really a nice RPG.

I'm not positive, this is my opinion, but I think the definition of epic for this top 11 list has two parts. One being the "greatness" of the game, but the other being just how long it is.

If oblivion is being judged by how extensive the game is, graphics and features wise, then Oblivion does indeed top Morrowind (And from the looks of reading the description, it is just about how extensive the game is). Now, obviously this doesn't make it a good game. Not by a longshot is oblivion the best game IMO, but I will give credit to it that 25.5+ miles of exploration is pretty damn big (and this is including Shivering Isles.

I was actually pleased with the titles on this list (minus Oblivion). It was nice to see some love to the classic Square games, especially Chrono Trigger and FFVI. It also pleased me immensely to see that for once someone saw through the hype that was FFVII.

What was the hype that surrounded Final Fantasy VII? I have to ask because this game was recommended to me by a friend many years ago and I don't know much about the news surrounding that game.

The game of final fantasy 7 is overrated because it has a standard and rather basic storyline that a lot of works of fiction have, but the difference is is that this was the first fully 3D final Fantasy, so it automatically has to be good in the gamers eyes. It's kind of like a remade movie from the 70s now in the new century, it's still a crappy movie whether or not you add cool special effects and sounds to it.

Because it's the newest, largest, and has best graphics in The Elder Scrolls series...
Though I would have included instead either Morrowind or Arena, not Oblivion...

Very much true, but it's still worth playing. It's not that it is a bad game, all of a sudden. True, not a near-work of art like Chrono Trigger or FFVI.

It has just always bothered me that FFVII continues to garner such praise, and yet very few people can back that praise up. Meanwhile, I can systematically dismantle all its 'bonuses'. Frankly, the game was subpar, and was not even that impressive visually for its time.

It was subpar for a FF, yes.

I can at least answer for me. FF VII is the only Final Fantasy game I have played. I was not really interested in the game, but a friend of mine told me it was the best game he ever played. So I gave it a try and enjoyed it very much despite the fact that some parts were very childish. (I even had that friend do the chocobo breeding and racing part for me.)

While it is true that the story is not really original, it is still one of the best I have personally seen in a video game. Let's not forget that we are talking about a video game here, not about a novel. How many video games have a story that is not full of clichés? I know there are others, but right now, the only one that comes to my mind is PS:T.

I am not trying to say I know better than you, this is my humble opinion based on the games I have played. FF VII is probably in my top 5 or 6. I don't see it as a masterpiece, but I really enjoyed it. I don't have any console by the way, so it might explain why I found the FF VII gameplay original since there are not many games like it on the PC.

FFVI's story is at least as original (maybe not in the set-up, but certainlty in the way it's worked out) as FFVII.
I have to back you up, though, FFVII isn't by far a sub-par game, while it's certainly isn't earth-shattering like most fanboys try to tell you.
