Life after Oblivion? What's the next game?

Okay, I'm the Mad God and my time in Oblivion has come to an end. Many hours of play, great bang for the buck. I always get a new game for the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions for new RPGs? I've done Dungeon Lord and Siege, both NeverWinters and Diabelos. Would welcome your recommendations. Thank you!

Depends on what you like really. Action RPG's with little focus on plot but heavy character options, go with Hellgate London. Actually that has quite a bit of the plot, but I've never really paid attention to it considering how much more fun it is to blow demons up with seven different kinds of fireball guns!

If you like heavy plot, story based games with some character options, Knights of the old republic and it's sequel are good games. KoTOR 2 has a few bugs and a not so great ending, but personally I think it's slightly better than KoTOR 1 (and don't get me wrong, KoTOR 1 was great).

If you liked oblivion, go with morrowind. Ten times better anyways.

Lastly, if you enjoy birds eye view action RPG's with little plot, similar to diablo 2, Titan Quest. TQ is one of two games to outshine Diablo 2, with the other being Sacred and simply how gargantuan the game is. And if you haven't played sacred, you might like that as well.

You could also check out Baldur's Gate I, II and their expansions. Maybe Arcanum might be your cup of tea, but it's rather old and hard to find.

Again, it really depends on your style of gaming. All the suggestions above are good. The Baldur's Gate games are a few years old now, but still brilliant RPGs. If you like Diablo, try out Hellgate. Fable has fun game play, as well. If you like a good story, Mass Effect and Jade Empire are worth your time, as well. I've yet to play the Witcher, but it's supposedly quite solid too.

One game I really loved that I don't feel ever gets its due, is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's really a wildly fun RPG with strong action components. It's a bit dark, though. So, make sure that's your cup of tea. Still, I can imagine that a DL and Oblivion fan would like its style of play.

I did both Baldur's Gates and enjoyed them so they were good suggestions. I love being a mage/fighter and love games where I can customize a character then go questing with auto mapping due to my lack of spatial ability. My gaming goes back to D&D's Eye of the Beholder. Remember that or I am dating myself? I spent time in school playing D&D on paper!

Planescape: Torment. It's got the best storyline ever created for an RPG, fascinating characters, and it allows you to play a mage, fighter, and/or thief, all in the same game. If you enjoyed BG2, you'll love this, too.

You may also want to consider the Icewind Dale series then. It doesn't have nearly the depth or level of story that BG2 and PS:T do, it's mostly hack and slash. But, it can be fun if you enjoy tactics and are in the mood to beat things up

Also there is a new joinable NPC mod out for IWD 2 now, which breathes some much needed life into the game

i played all the eye of the beholder games too I - IV i think

mhh im just playing NWN II with a few friends with the Inet its pretty fun, but the story is not that interesting, but its still fun

i couldnt enjoy icewinddale dunno why was to straight forward for me, maybe you want to play dungeon siege

ps. diablo II is the best action rpg, didnt try hellgate london though but its miiiillleeees better then sacred !

Id recommend the Gothic series. They have alot of the same qualities about them as does Oblivion ("living breathing world", first or third person, action type combat, lots of quests, pretty open exploration). FWIW I enjoyed Gothic I and II (couldnt play III yet due to my computer not being up to snuff) alot more than I did Oblivion

If you can stomach the combat mechanics, that is. My advice: Try out a demo first before getting the full game. I think demos are available for all three Gothic games.

I agree to try out the demo first.

I think Gothic's combat is alot more intuitive than Oblivion's click, click, click, block, click, block fest. Its more like press button, press button, block, press button, block

Once someone gets used to the controls (and it doesnt take that long if you keep working with it) its not a bad system. I gave up on it the first time I played Gothic I, but came back to the game, kept with it for alittle while, and it became one of my favorite all-time games once I finished it. The one thing that is kind of bad in Gothic I/II is the inventory system, but even that is not a deal breaker by any means. Another thing is that character customization isnt very deep, but the story, free form feeling, and NPC's make up for that.

Why don't you try Titan Quest. Heard a lot of good things about it even that it's nearly as good as the Diablo serie.

This thread's actually pretty good. What I like is, a game that's not all dark, which there's not many of, and a 3rd person or 1st person view, with dialogue, some decent story and all. I enjoy spending time in towns, the actual missions aren't exactly as important to me, because they usually end up being "find bad guy, kill him, get plotlines". I'm one of the people that's attracted by the little things, weather changes, good NPC's, especially sidequests.
Can't find a game that's like that all so much. Most of them are all dark and gloomy. I don't know why that seems to be a req. when it comes to RPG's.
