Question any expansive RPG like NWN that isn't fantasy?

My old buddies and I are looking for a coop team game. We had fun with NWN for multiple years thanks to all the player-made mods at NWVault, but for the moment we're worn out on swords & sorcery.

Then we spent a few months in City of Heroes, which was a great change of pace, but MMO grind is too much repetitive hack-n-slash (yet also too dangerously addictive, yikes) and not enough story/variety/etc.

So, is there anything out there that meets these needs?
  • multiplayer CRPG
  • 20+ hours of plot (preferably 200+)
  • main story with satisfying ending (plus side quests)
  • challenges both combat and non (dialogue, plot branches, interactive puzzles, etc)
  • in a genre other than medieval fantasy
  • optional: 3rd party mod-making
Help me, Obi-Wan GameBanshee, you're my only hope.

multiplayer? not enough that its scarce to find sci-fi RPGs at all or evne RPGs outside of sword and sorcery...

Hellgate: London
Fallout Tactics

These have multiplayer elements, however I am not sure either of them is suited to your style of play. Unfortunately I cannot think of any other CRPGs that fit your bill.

Unless you're deadset on the MP-component, there's also Fallout I & II.
There's also NWN- d20 Modern. Search the Vault for it.
Arcanum has multiplayer and some modern elements. It's a mix of fantasy and industrial revolution age technology.
Don't forget Vampire Bloodlines.

Thanks much for the suggestions. Yes, multiplay is absolutely essential, moreso than any of the other elements we're trying to find. Heck, we might end up trying Team Fortress if we can't find an RPG.

I didn't realize that NWN was such an anomaly in the game world; we would play it forever except for the limited genre and rulesystem. And it's very sad that there are so few MP CRPGs available in general.

I stumbled on a game that might fit your bill. Alien Shooter and Alien Shooter Vengeance. It's avaible on Steam for 8 euro. There should also be a demo around.
