As i have said several times, if you compare PoR:RoMD with BG games you will be dissapointed about it. The game has many differences but it is fairly a good game.

Just a few notes, the game uses 3rd Edition D&D rules, has a turned based combat system but it has no NPC interaction and a crappy buy/sell system. The game was also a buggy one but it seems that most bugs where fixed with the latest patch.
So it is actually your choice.

I paid $17 for it and certainly feel I got my money's worth. It kept me occupied for just over a month and, once I got into it, I had a lot of fun playing it.

This is definitely *not* BG or IWD - there's not much plot and there's not much role-playing. It's basically just one long, repetitious dungeon crawl from beginning to end. But the artwork is first-rate, the character animations are incredibly well done, the music is decent and the turn-based combat is strangely compelling, becoming more so the longer you play. I couldn't wait to get home from work each day so I could continue playing.

Definitely check out the forum at the official web site.

Good luck.

I found it very disappointing. The first hour sucks you in by giving you the impression that you'll be dealing with a very diverse environment filled with varied tasks and terrain. Then you move underground for an endless maze of lookalike rooms, filled with basically the same creatures that are just hanging around. The graphics go from middling to terrible, and much time is spent traveling long distances to gain short-lived benefits from fountains (which for some reason the enemy races don't use) that fade shortly after you arrive for a big battle.

The lack of imagination was startling, especially when you realize that the dev team had several perfectly good examples of how to do a dungeon crawl, modern style, right before their eyes (most notably IWD). They didn't have to do IWD, of course, but they could and should have learned how to apply imagination to the structuring of environments, the varying of quests, etc.

Extremely buggy game, too, when it was initially released. If you grab it, be sure you get the latest updates.

Man, am I glad I checked out this forum. I almost bought the game yesterday but I decided to wait and read some posts about it first. Seems everybody thinks it's a mediocre game at best. No, I'll wait for IWD2 instead...
