Toughest Battle?

for me, still is the battle with Greyanna and her Drow. It took me two tries this time around, I think I got a little lucky too. Would have been easier had I had the confusion spell, but I choose a sorcerer/cleric and he is only like levels 5/7 for each class respectivly

That was the toughest battle for me as well. But I haven't played in years. I've been thinking about going back to it, but is it worth it. I had gotten 75% through the game and then was stricken with the most annoying bug ever: the invisible character; so I ditched the game and haven't played since.

I'm going to install this again right now and try to like it. Any tips for a newbie? Especially party tips?

rogues and clerics for me are mvp's of your team. rogues can disable those pesky traps which might kill your party, and clerics can heal/raise/restore drained stats and turn nasty undead. Paladins can do this too, just not as good at it
archers are useless in this game, so don't bother with them, protect your weaker characters, use defense boosting spells, save often and take your vitamins
keep in mind, some areas are meant to be taken on later than pthers, so if you encounter a tough battle, come back later when you are stronger, and have better weapons/spells

I don't know...I'm just terrible at this game, I can't get past the first dungeon no matter what, I think I'm going to phase out the F. Realms series, I just don't understand them, and this game looks wonderful. =\

Tell you one thing, this game is not for the impatient!!! Take your time, sometimes it's taken me 5 or 6 times to be successfull in more than one battle. Big tip, fight from doorways whenever you can, putting your 2 strongest blocking the opening, BEFORE you open it, with cleric(s) to the side and a sorcerer backing up the two heavies with magic missiles and a charm spell or two. And don't be shy to ask for help. This is one of the best forums for support, bar none...luck
PS to Cheat, just going into room 65 agaist Greyanna, nice to know you consider this your toughest!!!!

the one time I played with just my two characters, by that point in the game(greyanna) they were maybe 8-9 levels ahead of normal, so they just mopped up the drow,
We started in the room to the east of Greyanna, stood out of site, and Greyanna just charged into the room, stood next to my fighter/thief/sorcerer and tried to cast a spell at him, but he interupted her with a fatal jabbing of the deathspike on an attack of opportunity. The rest of the battle was downhill from there

but prior to that, on my first few tries it took me forever to beat that battle, untill I tried the rest of the floor first, got some chain lightening wands, learned confusion, and still with all of that I still lost all but maybe 1 or 2 characters. It's the drow's damn magic resistance and their skill with the bow that makes them so leathal

Well, Cheat, I just beat Grayanna!! Having her come right up beside you, I'd say you were a lot lucky!! Anyhow, this was my fourth try at her. Yesterday, I started with the front door-a disaster. Then went to the side door (east??) and got creamed because, like you said, her damn resistance to spells, and we wasted firestrikes, fireball and other good stuff on her. Then went to the back door, you know, the big area in the back, but that was too open and we were too exposed, and too dead very quickly!! So, this AM went back to the side door and concentrated all spells on her troops until there was just her and 3 Droth. We mopped them up in hand to hand combat with the loss of 3 out of 6 of my gang, which we corrected asap! A great rush, but it's hard for me to pick this as the toughest battle what with all the other multiple opponent fights I've had lately!! Like Bergos (in the dark!), the 23 Orogs in room 5, just to mention a couple......One heck of a challenging game!

Greyanna? please, confusion fireball and some unlucky saving throws and she and her crew are moping the floor with their corpses, there isnt really any hard battles if you:

1. Use potions.
2. Use scrolls.
3. Use turn undead.
4. Cast spells.
5. Use a ranged fighter.
6. Use a melle fighter.
7. Don't multi class untill you have max level in your original class.
8. Dont use classes like ranger/monk/paladin which need outrageous stats or have crappy abilities or both.
9. Always rest when you can, or go back to rest spots which you should always mark on the map in harder dungeons.
10. Save your game after each and every battle.
11. Use restoration.
12. Use wands like theres no tomorow.
13. Pick the righ spells for your sorcerrers, need at least 2.
14. Right stats for your fighters, no charisma inteligence and at least 10 to wisdom.
15. Take off the timed rounds and stop to think about every single action you preform, its gains and risks.
16. Use delay and refocus.
17. Complete quests.
18. Explore dugeons compleatly.
19. Create the right party from the start.
20. Have lots and lots of time to play and think.

Doing this i finished the game without any problems except the sheer frustration of the first lower levels. I beat Greyanna on my second try because i was caught unprepared the first time, sorcerrers just spammed confustion untill it had a good efect then used fireball and destructive spells, fighters held off the doorways and shot arrows at anything they could, they where always hasted, either through potions or spells, the clerics used seering light, heal, prayer, and flamestrike, and after fighting her for around an hour or so i won.

Things to remeber are that characters WILL die, get ready to use a wand to resurect them, do NOT cast resurection in combat unless the persons body is well clear of anyone who threatens an AOO on your cleric, because you can and will get your resurection interupted, wands cannot be interupted so keep a good suply of them and use them as necesary.

well yeah, if you know what you're doing, you won't loose anyone really, this time around I've only lost maybe 7 characters who were quickly resurected, ad right now I'm in the lower keep
but I disagree with the multiclassing, I once maid a thief/monk, he was leathal

Talking

Interesting, you finished the whole game without a Rogue! Or was that just the last half....?
Actually, every major battle is just that, a major battle. And everthing is relative, right! One little mistake, or some lucky breaks, or some good strategy or even the second or third try=experience can make the difference, so this discussion re which do you think is the toughest is really accademic..

Wink

took you an hour to beat Greyanna? took me 15 min last time

you want fun, try playin gwithout a sorcerer, I tried that, using 5 front liners and a cleric that I used as a offensive spell caster

but really, any major battle with the drow will usually be tougher than one with the cult or orogs or undead just because of their magic resistance and deadly ability with the bows, especially if you have elves in your party

Yea took around an hour, no reloads exacept the first, i actualy stoped to think what i should do, wasnt hard at all just need to be careful because theres a lot of them.

Yea game with no magic is very fun to play for the hell of finishing it, that or solo paladin/monk or paladin/sorcerer. Paladin/Cleric is just chease, with the demoniac and pincers hes invincible, but the demoniac is hard to get in the original campaining unless you have a good rogue.

A max level paladin/cleric even kills liches with turn undead.

Other reason was that:

Drow miss
Drow miss
Drow miss
Player 1 miss
Player 1 miss
Player 1 miss
Greyanna hit
Greyanna miss
Greyanna miss
Player 2 miss
Player 2 miss

And because my party was multiclassed so they wherent good at much.

Oh and since archers where mentioned above, the lack of rapid shot killed them, but an elven archer with prince antoanes stormbow haste and buffs wont miss unless its a natural 1, and i belive it automaticaly deals duble damage and the bow you get of palandrelar at the end is also good, i had emeric with his crapy dexterity use it and do a good 30 damage each hit, criticals came up to about 50, not that a melle couldnt do it. but 6 attacks per round that almost never miss are really not something to laugh at.
