Lower Keep/Ancient Tombs

Big trouble in the way of Dwarven Statues,,,I got past the first two Tombs, 17 & 18, put the common iron blade in the basin of 19, killed off the first two wraiths on my way to 20, was tackling the third wraith when the Dwarven Statue got activated. Melee weapons don't work and my spell casters (3) don't live long enough to kill the succer! I don't know what set him off, can't beat him and, since I'm in combat mode, can't outrun him as the next one gets into the action soon enough!! So I went back to the beginning of the Tombs and did a straight walkthrough, killing all the undead but not touching anything else. Everything went fine until I arrived at the spot beween 19 & 20 and the same thing happened again. Since there is no way to proceed, I'm stuck Any suggestions would be appreciated....

PS this is my second time through the game and had no trouble like this the first time?

I've had that happen, here's what you do to avoid that happening
stay in the current room and let the undead come to you, if you fight them out in the hall where the statue is, it gets activated, and if you kill it the game glitches
