my party seems to be abnormally slow at getting extra XP, is this just the way the game is or am i doing something wrong?

I dont think so. After playing it for a while, the xp-thing is something i dont really get through. What i can say is that its getting faster and faster continueing the game. Its important to speak reguarly with beriand and clear every zone as far as u can. use every thing u have to fasten the fights. The beginning is quite boring with lots of slow undeads. but with faeril cleric lvl 9-17 u can kill 10 a one strike. So the fights getting faster with time.
Hope this helps a little bit through the "slow" time at beginning.
