I always read bad opinions about this game and never played it. Now my 5 years old son discovered it on the shelf lol and we tried it together. Surprisingly, it seems playable, at least, not worse than Temple of Elemental Evil. My son, playing barbarian, manages to kill some orcs and undead in the beginning. Now some features are a bit odd to me, for instance, the character moves quite slowly. So, I'd be grateful if U could advise me some tricks to enhance the overall playability.

Thank U in advance,
Yigor

The characters move faster if you let them run.
You can turn the run mode on with the right shift-key.
However, I wouldn`t let your son play it alone because there are some quite scary scenes. (Once I played it for three hours when it was already dark outside ,my parents were downstairs and my door was closed so I didn`t hear anyone.
I am not a very fearful person but there was also quite a scary music and when my brother suddenly opened the door and screamed:"Booo!", I nearly had a heart attack. (I am 15 years old and not afraid of ghost-stories or something like that))
I would also not judge the game because of some bad reports about it. It was the PC game I enjoyed most. (and I have got many games)

I hope you have fun with the game.

PS: Please excuse any mistakes in my reply. I´m from germany, so my English isn`t perfect.

Thanx Zung! Nope, I'm always nearby, my son is too young, he needs help frequently anyway.

Dats true that there are now nice 3D RPG like Morrowind, Oblivion and NWN2; PoR could hardly compete with them. Now PoR is indeed playable, use 3rd edition D&D rules and there are no other computer games in Pool of Radiance setting AFAIK.

I heard stories that non-patched PoR erased all on the hard disc RoFL. So I was cautious with it and installed the latest patch immediately.

Nobody speaks perfect English lol and it's not necessary. If U saw how French or Spanish speak English (which happens quite rarely), U'd consider yourself a linguistic champion.

There's a mod which let's you change the game speed.
There's also a mod which grants the correct 3E XP for defeating monsters, so you don't have to stay level 2 for an eternity.

Take a look at the PoR2 section at sorcerers.net.
