So donīt waste spells casting at the statue, but use spells before the battle to aid your fighters (e.g. Bless to hit better, Prayer, Bulls Strength to raise strenght, Haste!, Improved Invisibility - whatever your spellcasters have available).
You should have a few magical weapons before that fight so make sure your fighters have some +2 stuff to beat the statue.
The *best* weapon you can have at that point against that opponent is the "Mountain Fist" which can be found in the dwarven dungeons. As far as I remmeber its is a onehanded weapon with +2 against all but +5 against constructs.
