Who or what is O? (minor spoiler)

One of the things I like the most about RPGs are those shady, mysterious characters you encounter in game. I have a bunch of RPGs waiting to be played, but I was really fascinated by Torment, so I am playing only Torment now(I used to play BG1,Icewind Dale HOW and Fable simoultaneously). I got really intrigued (and confused ) by that "O" npc I met in The Smoldering Corpse bar. He vanished and I got +1 wisdom, but I didn't quite understand what exactly is he. It would be nice if someone would enlighten me .

He is a force in semantics, as well as a symbol of a certain aspect of all realities.

What is O? He's the guy that got me hooked on this game (among other things later). The concept of a universal or divine (I forget which) alphabet he introduced evoked images of ancient days when letters (runes) had the power of words, or more.
