Newb Question: Mage

I recently bought Planescape, and starting playing. At the char creation screen, I chose the stats that I saw most fit to a decent mage. First I wondered that I couldn't choose a class, but the again I thought, maybe you're supposed to start at fighter lvl 3. Now I just got my first lvl up, and I automatically lvl up in the fighter class. Is there anyway to change that? I really don't want to play a fighter.... Can't I change my class to mage? And if I can change, when can I do so?

You can switch classes when you find an NPC who can train your character in the new class. This also applies to proficiency points: in order for a Fighter to gain extra proficiency points in a weapon, you have to find a trainer who can help your character improve his skills. After you switch classes, you can switch back to the old class at any time if you can find a trainer. Luckily, you can even have trainers in your own party (they're joinable NPCs) who will allow you to switch class at will. Just talk to them and ask if they have any skills they can teach you.

SPOILER

To become a Mage, look for an NPC named Old Mebbeth. You'll pass by her hut when you go looking for Pharod. Be nice to her, and she'll return the favor.

Mebbeth's hut is located near the center of Ragpicker's Square. To get there, I think you have to go to the northwest corner of the northwest sector of the Hive.

If you're trying to become a Mage as fast as you can, bear in mind that Mebbeth will ask you to perform some quests that involve a lot of running back and forth. The next Mage trainer won't be available until you have progressed significantly in the game, so as I said, be nice to Mebbeth and she'll reward you. And don't forget her when you've gotten what you need from her.

SPOILER

Dak'kon (who can join your party) has enough skill to help you switch from Mage to Fighter and back, but he cannot help you acquire extra proficiency points (since he uses the mental discipline of the karach rather than pure physical skill), and he cannot help you become a Mage for the first time (since he uses Gith magic instead of human magic). It doesn't hurt to get to know your companions--they're all very special.

What VonDondu speaks is true - listen to her Additionally, if this is your first time playing through Torment, and I assume it is, you might want to become a ca. level 6 fighter before you get trained in The Arts for the additional hitpoints you will acquire. It doesn't make a humongous difference, especially since the death of the main character isn't something you should be too worried about, but you might want to keep this in mind when switching.
