how do i shift my class?

silly question, i know, but i read the manual three times and didn't understand how do i do it. i start as a fighter, and got leveled up, but couldn't find any way to be a mage.

how is it done?

It's all done in a very roleplaying manner. So you speak to Dak'kon and mention wishing to continue on one of two paths, the warrior or the mage; but you use a more elaborate, round about way of saying this. And Annah does as much for Thief and Warrior.

Note, you can only get the mage option after you've run a series of mini-quests.

In the Burning Corpse outside the Mortuary. But even then, he can't help you become a mage, only retrain you to become one, after someone else has made you one.
Just play the game, explore Sigil, and you'll find out. And don't worry: even if you get to level 6 or so as a fighter, you'll still begin as a lvl 1 mage and end up becoming a lvl 22 one, if you want to.

Yes, indeed. I normally become something along the line of Fighter 9 - Thief 6 - Wizard 22.
