Does it work on Windows Vista???

Hi, I have yet to buy this game and its been impossible to find the game thats not priced as a 'new' or 'rare' game. So my questions are these, has anyone tried it with Windows Vista and does it work ok? I've got the recent Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale packs with all the games in and they seem to work ok. Also does anyone know if this games ever going to be re-released? It seems this classic game has been ignored for releases when I'm always seeing much worse games still being sold from about the same time. I'm in the UK by the way so maybe its different elsewhere for availability. Thanks for your help in advance!

I would guess yes, since all the above stem from the same game engine. Not for sure on that one, though. But good to know the others are cool with Vista!

I would guess not.

"Torment" was developed by Black Isle Studios, Inc (who also developed the "Fallout" & "Icewind Dale" series) using the game engine developed for "Baldur's Gate" by Bioware, Inc. It was published by Interplay, Inc.

Alas, Interplay shut down Black Isle Studios before becoming defunct themselves.

There is no justice.

So who now has the legal rights to these games?

Presumably either the reconstituted Interplay, or whomever bought the rights to Interplay's titles when the company declared bankruptcy. Atari, I think.

I wonder if Whichever company would have to get approval from Wizards of the Coast, if they own the Planescape license and would have any legal say over such a matter. If so, then it would add more red tape to the proposition of re-releasing a game that wasn't considered a top-seller to begin with, alas, making the unlikely seem less likely.

Have BG and ID been re-released else where or is it just in Europe? It seems strange that Atrai have re-released those games and not P:T or any of Interplays other games, I know they own and have released the temple of elemental evil so I don't see where they couldn't make up a package of single games like the two mentioned.

P:T doesn't seem to work in Vista, but perhaps someone who knows more than me can help. When you first play it, it's fine. But the second time you try and load your save, it says "Please place disk 2 in drive C:".

I went in to the .ini file, but it lists my CD drive, E:, as the place to look for all the disks.

Next I copied the "cd2" folder from the disk onto my C: drive to see if that would work, which it didn't.

Then I tried changing the .ini file so that it looks for the files on the C: drive, but that doesn't work either. I'm out of ideas, is there anyone who can help?

I wonder if it's not finding the data at E:? Do you have it in a specific game folder? If so, try listing it out in its entirety. Or it may be something remarkably stupid, like the absence of a "\" after the "E:". Stranger things have happened.

Hi Fable,

Thanks for your response. I've tried every variation on it I can. At the moment, I'm doing a clean reinstall of the game, just out of lack of other options really. It seems no matter what I change the information in the .ini file to, the game always says "drive c:" on the loading screen. I don't know whether it's actually looking there, or following the .ini file, but either way it's going nowhere. If I find a solution, I'll come back here and post it.

Does it by any chance change the datetime of the INI file after each attempt to play? If so, it may be changing INI content. Try fixing it to E:\, and setting the INI file to read-only.

Thanks again for the help, but still no luck I'm afraid.

After I reinstalled it, it once again worked the first time I played it but not the second. On the first time, it said "please place Disk 2 in drive E:\", but the second time it reverted back to the old "drive c:" problem.

I'm going to try installing the official patch, see if that works.

Did it require Windows? I honestly can't remember, despite playing it last year (WinXP). If not, try this: DOSbox. I've used it on a number of recalcitrant games before with excellent luck.

It worked fine for me on windows vista. I finished it on vista in the last 2 weeks. Do you have the 2 cd or 4 cd edition?? Did you install and play under win xp sp 2 compat mode??

Also do you have all the patches installed and all system drivers up to date??

With the multi CD version I've had the a disc 2 problem and had to reinstall the game. Maybe you could try to copy all of the CDs onto your C drive and install from there. My CD/DVD is goofy right now and I have to copy them in safe mode to my desktop and install in regular mode. It takes a lot of time but there is no need to swap CDs.
