Warhammer Online

Anybody know anything about this?

http://www.warhammeronline.com/default.asp

I sort of like the idea, since Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was one of the best pen & paper games the genre had to offer back in the early 80s. The Old World is one of the best gaming worlds ever thought up, an insanely grim version of our own Europe.
So, anyone heard or even tried it yet? Fable? Anyone?

I've been following it for a bit, actually, and even had a few nice chats with some of the dev team. Good bunch of guys. The project itself is quite ambitious, considering they're trying to bring the Old World into a visual reality. It's a lot to live up to.

MY main concern, though, is the fact they'e focusing on the Reiklanders, and the Empire's territory. I'd much rather see them focus it in the Chaos Wastes, or even Bretonnia, or if even Ul'thuan (but that's just case of my High Elves )

It's been a bit since I've dug anything up on them, but had been thinking about getting an interview with them.

Well, from a roleplaying perspective, the Reik is perfect if you want to bring that sinister part of the Old World to life. I remember the guys over at Wizards of The Coast admitted openly that there wouldn't have been any Ravenloft without the Old World inspiration. The problem with the Wastes is that it's nigh on impossible to roleplay there, since you'll mutate into a creepazoid in no time. If they do it right, and put in the Machiavelian plotting and the Skaven and stuff, I think they have a winner. Games Workshop screwed up something royal when they dropped WFRP just as it was gaining momentum.

I was never a huge fan of the WFRP, as I was a bit skirmisher, but yeah, it was a good product that they dropped

Funny though, the game is still HUGE all over Europe, and especially in Germany, France and Scandinavia. Guess we like the doom and gloom. If they put their back into it, they could revive it in no time. It was only dropped because Citadel wanted to sell more miniatures. Which they most certainly did!
So when is this game coming out?

They haven't actually shared an official release date, but last I talked with them, they were saying '05.

Ulthuan? Bah! If you want to see namby pamby fairies go watch Peter Pan!

Warhammer Online is looking sweet. I love the graphics so far. It really does look like the miniatures brought to life (especially the black orc). I also like the little bit about monster conning

"As we all know, the single most important factor that makes combat in the real world dangerous is the fact that it is unpredictable. You know the score… that weedy guy with the specs might just turn out to be a black belt in Karate…or it could be that three of his mates are about to walk around the corner. Either way, the reason why most of us don’t go around initiating combat with complete strangers is because we simply can’t predict the outcome and that very lack of predictability both makes it dangerous and by extension - EXCITING!

However, at the core of most current online game mechanics is the principle of coloured bar monster conning.

You know the score… you click on that Orc and get a little coloured bar that tells you whether he is ‘safe’ – you’ll easily kill him, ‘dangerous’ – it might be an even fight, or ‘lethal’ – he’ll beat you to pulp! There is simply no equivalent to this in any ‘real’ or ‘fantasy’ world, but for some reason it has become part of the genre. However, if in real life, I see a six-foot guy walking down the street, built like a barrel and with a menacing array of facial scars and tattoos then I’m unlikely to be anything other than polite to him! I’m certainly not going to walk up to him and say, “Oi! Got the time you fat git!” My experience and intelligence should tell me that this is a bad plan…then again, there’s always the first time…

Similarly our ambition for Warhammer Online is that your in-game experience should inform just who you decide to attack or not, and if something looks mean…it probably is mean! Now take another look at that Orc? Do you think that you should walk up to this monster on your own and initiate combat, or do you think you’d be better advised to have one or two mates with you? – Well done, you’ve just cracked the Warhammer Online monster conning system! "

So if it looks tough in WO, then it probably is tough! Great system.

I always hated the fact that Warhammer made Orcs green!

Not just warhammer. Orcs being green is pretty much a standard of fantasy. And they're not entirely green, remember the Black Orcs.

Yeah, most fantasy games feature green orcs. Warhammer and Warcraft are the most obvious examples. A number of the orcs in LotR are green too (though they come in all sorts of other colors). Heck, I can't think of any game off the top of my head that doesn't have greenish orcs.

Besides, what's wrong with green orcs anyway?

Silence, you! Back to that drawing board for DCI, or we'll be forced to put you on canoe beer and toast!

Why not "green orcs and spam" instead of canoe beer and toast? *Scampers back to his cave/drawing studio*

I trust that if your quote shows up in DCI, you'll thank GB for providing the inspiration.

I am Foul,
Foul I am

That Foul-I-am!
That Foul-I-am!
I do not like that Foul-I-am!

Do you like green orcs and spam?

I do not like them, Foul-I-am.
I do not like green orcs and spam.

Would you like them here or there?

I would not like them here or there.
I would not like them anywhere.
I do not like green orcs and spam.
I do not like them, Foul-I-am.

Would you eat them on an easel?
Would you eat them with Weasel?

Not on an easel.
Not with Weasel.
Not on a table.
Not with Fable.
I would not eat them here or there.
I would not eat them anywhere.
I would not eat green orcs and spam.
I do not like them, Foul-I-am.

Would you? Could you? In a bar?
Eat them! Eat them! Here they are.

I would not, could not, in a bar.

You may like them. I can tell.
You should try them or go to hell!

I would not, could not, even in hell.
Not in a bar! Now say fairwell.
I do not like them on an easel.
I do not like them with Weasel.
I do not like them on a table.
I do not like them with fable.
I do not like them here or there.
I do not like them anywhere.
I do not like green orcs and spam.
I do not like them, Foul-I-am.

Could you, would you, with a sheep?

I would not, could not, with a sheep!

Would you, could you, with a creep?

I could not, would not, with a creep.
I will not, will not, with a sheep.
I will not eat them in a bell.
I will not eat them even in hell.
I do not like them on an easel.
I do not like them with Weasel.
I do not like them on a table.
I do not like them with fable.
I do not like them ANYWHERE!
I do not like green orcs and spam!
I do not like them, Foul-I-am.

You do not like them. So you say.
Try them! Try them! And you may.
Try them and you may, I say.

Foul! If you will let me be,
I will try them. You will see.
Say! I like green orcs and spam!
I do! I like them, Foul-I-am!
And I would eat them with a sheep.
And I would eat them with a creep...
And I will eat on an easel.
And in the dark or with Weasel.
And in hell or in a bell,
They are so good, so good, they're really swell!
And I will eat them here and there.
Say! I will eat them ANYWHERE!
I do so like
green orcs and spam!
Thank you!
Thank you, Foul-I-am!
