Curse of the Genre

While I was browsing Blue's News, I come across this interesting article titled: Curse of the Genre. Thoughts?

What he says isn't new. Chris Crawford has been playing the same horn for over 15 years, to no avail--because the Game Industry wants to create a small series of easily duplicated, quickly sold molds into which every idea and all energy can be poured. So it really doesn't matter what Cliff says (though I'm a big fan of both Democracy 2 and Kudos): the issue isn't genre busting. It's where the money's at.

Thoughts? That he's right. It's kinda hard though to remember what exactly amazed me back in the day. A lot of games I played on the MSX were truly distinct pieces, but I guess that kind of was the norm back then. Back then I didn't go "Woot, this Boulderdash game supports the first ever physics engine!". I went 'Neat!' and then I got tired of it after getting hit by one of those butterflies for the Nth time.
