Unhappy Addicted to Total War

I finally got around to getting Medeival Total War a couple months or so ago, and my social life has become non-existant. I am completely obbseesed with conquering the world as the Germans, but seeing as how that means everybody wants a peice of me, my generals initially hate my guts and are just looking for an opportunity to stab me in the back and assume the reigns of power, the pope thinks I shouldn't wage war on anyone, even in defence, and as a result has me excommunicated every time I turn around, which causes my population to go nuts and revolt on me, I don't see any relief for me in the long term. Esp considering my kings progressivly become worse and worse.

Sigh.....Anybody else here play this game? Got any suggestions for me? I need input, Rome Total War isn't that far away

I like the game, @BS, but I admit to preferring the greater diplomatic/economic options of Europa Universalis II--so I'm afraid I can't really help you too much. IMO, the Total War series only needs that aspect of EU2 to become a worldbeater; either that, or EU2 needs the military aspect of Total War.

Forget the Germans. Byzantines. Yes, Byzantines.

Never played that fable. How in-depth are the diplomatic and economic options? They are supposedly fleshing out the options for Rome TW, but I ain't got any specifics yet. Sounds like they are actually trying to make alliances worth something besides just putting off an attack for awhile though

@Chan...naw, I played as the Byzantines, the Danes, the English, even started as the french once, but nothing has been as much a pain as the Germans. At least I own both Venice and Flanders now. French were abput to whack me good til the English reappeared at there back door.

@Bloodstalker: Hehe, try the Aragonese.

As soon as Rome TW hits the shelves, I am snapping it up.

Medivel total war? You have so many problems? Really? I loved that game until i lost it well a friend lost it and it seems i will never get it back.

Heck play the muslim empires. I never really managed my towns or areas or whatever you call them.

I just played the game for its in dept military strategy when i could set up ambushes out flank the enemy. Man i spent hours setting up battle plans and how to establish my forces etc. Now that is teh beauty of the game. Esp when attack a keep. I won the fight with one archer living. Now hell that was a hard won battle.

You nuts? I want hard, not suicidal

@fas....I'll likely do a muslim play through when this one is dead. I just really REALLY sucked at desert warfare at first, and am just now getting to where i could probably use their units without getting my butt handed to me. Of course, seeing as how the pope just ex-commed me, I am going to remember to lay waste to Rome when I do

Like Fable I prefere Europa Universalis, although it have some balance issues that I dislike, as well as a not too good AI its imo the best strategy game I ever played.

I liked Medieval too, played it only a little bit as the Ottomans, but I found it to tedious to manage when your empire expanded, and also as your production soared battles became less interesting. I found myselfe longing for the simplicity of Shougun: Total war.

But there were many featuers I really enjoyed, most of them related to how to handle your generals, the vices and virtues they got etc. And I must say that even though diplomacy is a far step from EU, it was a great leap upwards from Shogun.

Edit:
@BS: What did you find difficult with desert warfare? I thought it was pretty much the same, only more room to maneuver...

Regarding diplomatic otitons for EU, the diplomacy isnt an option wich is a good thing here. Mismanage your diplomacy and you will have severe problems even as France or Russia. And the other way around, manage your diplomacy well and it will not just be a means to put of an inevitable conflict for a few years, it will be a tool to gain valuable allies as well as valluable land. Its quite possible to annex another nation entirely by diplomatic means.

The first desert battle I fought was as one of the Catholic factions. The problem was, my troops were armored, and as such, roasted before I got halfway to the enemy lines. They were fatigued and ready to route before the first blow fell

I thought about trying the Muslim factions, but looked at their unit roster first and decided I needed some practice before trying to fight with what they have available. They looked to me to be more mobile and light-weight than I was used to, and I am more of a bruiser type person

True. But man if you get them right, those desert archers on camel back form one of the best counter offence forces around. Because they are on camel back they get faster speeds and heck they are archers to so they can take the enemy down from afar.

I really need to find those cds for that game.

Plus i never bothered managing my lands. I kinda built up an army and whiped the rest of the world before i had to deal with micromanagement. After the board was all mine i kinda stopped playing....and started a new game for more battles

I love those damn battles. So many options so many strategies....god that was heaven....all i played were the battles i would attack, conquer and move on to attack again and win again. It was great. I spent more time setting up one battle than i ever spent running my lands.

heh, I must remember to get my own copy of that game. last time I played, the pope kept declaring crusades against me, so my armies landed in spain, marched up through aragon, almost completely destroying it, and then into italy. I eventually captured the pope, the ransom wasn't paid, so I installed my own islamic one and sailed off home.

Three words: Pikemen. Horse archers. Add in some spearmen with armor upgrades under a 5+ star commander, anything is yours. Great morale makes those spearmen awesome.

I haven't tried playing a Muslim faction yet. If I do, I think I will start with Egypt, since they possess some of the richest provinces on the map. I was cranking out over 2200 florins a turn as the Byzantines out of Egypt proper alone before the Golden Horde came.

@BS: I'm thinking Aragonese ally with Germans, possibly Spanish, bide your time, attack the Italians...get a little muscle (and money hehe), kick some French butt. Then set your sights on Isabella and dinner in Madrid.

Oh, and I basically leave the Pope alone in his little province, saving it for last since we know that dude keeps coming back every once in a while with massive stacks of armies.
