Probably Infinity Ward want to set this series apart from their previous Call of Duty games?

I admit that their naming convention is somewhat broken, considering how CoD 4 is set in the modern era after having three games set in WW2, while the fifth one did a u-turn back to the same era, even if it is done by Treyarch.

Must be an icon to the Call of Duty games (or IW have a soft spot for him). Hence why he made an appearance in CoD 4. Was surprised to see him when I first played it, but it didn't bother me that much.
