Weapon selection problem

I have a wood elf ranger who is supposed to be a sword type (as opposed to bow type). I thought that such an individual would be able to carry a short sword or rapier with some type of shield. So far all I have been able to get equipped is a two handed sword with of course no shield ... One of the other members of my party has inventory containing a Rapier 1 which cannot be equipped by that character. According to everything I have read my ranger should be able to have that weapon but I can't seem to get it to transfer to the inventory. Is there something I am overlooking? Every time I click and drag to the ranger the portrait has a greenish glow but just won't make the transition. I have searched the manual but cannot find a description of the greenish glow. I am running an Alien 51x laptop with Vista.

The only thing I can think is you are dragging someone's equiped weapon and trying to drag into another character's inventory. If it is equiped you must first transfer from equiped to inventory of that character. Then you can drag from one chars inventory to another char. Or try dropping on the ground, maybe?

I can move it to another person's inventory with no problem ... just not my wood elf ranger. The character inventory carrying the rapier 1 is armed with a quarterstaff #2.

the wood elf should be able to carry an item in his inventory. Also ranger and elf both give proficiency in rapier, so should also be able to wield the rapier.
