Patch 1.02 Black Box Over Dialogue Window Bug

Hi, I just joined and I tried searching for anything about this in the Forum, but came up blank. So if this has been discussed already, sorry.

I just updated my NWN2 to 1.02.788 english. I went to play and there's some wierd black rectangular box covering my dialogue window

. If I keep the dialogue window in it's smallest size, the black box covers almost all of it. The only way I can see any real amount of the dialogue is if I stretch the dialogue box up vertically, though the black rectangle/bug still stays there.

Has anyone else seen this, and is there any way to get rid of it? Or do I just have to wait for the 1.03 patch and hope the developers know about it and will fix it?

By the by, I havent had any of the other problems that other people have mentioned like crashing or graphics degredation. Just that black rectangle over the dialogue window.

Honestly, I have no clue what you are talking about. I don't have this problem at all. I would suggest perhaps uninstalling the game, reinstalling and updating it again to see if that fixes it.

Some people have reported the problem. You might try downloading the beta 1.03 patch and see if that solves things. We have a link to the patch on the front page in the news section.

Sometimes things don't get patched right, so you can always start over.
Backup yoiur saves, uninstall, reinstall and patch if you get it again and 1.03 doesn't help then just skip it for official 1.03.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I downloaded the (beta)1.03 patch and it got rid of the black rectangle over my dialogue box, but now I can't interact with any of the Merchants!

Anyone else encounter this? When I ask to see what they have for sale, the small dialogue pop-up window closes, but the shopping window never opens! I'll spend some more time and try every single seller in the Docks and Merchant Quarter to see if there's any that still work.

I hope the (non-beta) 1.03 patch is better than this.

I'm probably wrong, but this rectangle box sounds like the DebugMode window. Did you try clicking into it with your cursor and then hitting "Enter"? Like I said, I could be dead wrong about this, but if you patched the game while DebugMode was enabled, that might account for your problem with the merchants.

Try this: just hit "Enter" when you have the game running. If the rectangle box appears over your dialogue, you'll know for sure it's the DebugMode window. Click into it with the cursor, type "DebugMode 0" ( without the "" ), and hit "Enter" again. The rectangle box should disappear and your dialogue box should show a message along the lines of "DebugMode inactive/disabled/something like that".

If that's the problem, you might want to uninstall the game, re-install, and check if that black rectangle box appears again. If it doesn't, and if you can interact safely with the merchants, you might not need the beta patch.

Again, I could be wrong about this. Take with a grain of salt.

I went ahead and used the Retro 1.03(beta) to 1.02 patch reverser. I just couldn't handle not being able to interact with merchants.

I have the black rectangle over my dialogue box again, but I guess I'll live with it. I discovered that I can type text in the rectangular box, but typing that "DebugMode 0" didn't do anything.

I'll just wait for the Official 1.03 patch and hope they clean it up.

Well, if you can click and write in it, it's most likely the DebugMode window. Did you try a few variations of the spelling, like

DebugMode=0

aside from DebugMode 0 ?

Another thing you might want to try is to open the file nwn.ini in the programs/Atari/Neverwinter Nights 2, and under [Game Options], setting the entry DebugMode=1 to DebugMode=0, which should definitely disable the DebugMode until that entry is changed again?

Or, and that's something that was also discussed in another threat... in order to make the DebugMode work in the first place, you need to right-click on your active character, then hit Enter to make the DebugWindow come up, then type DebugMode 0 or DebugMode=0 OR ##DebugMode 0 OR ##DebugMode=0 ( pfuh, lots of options ), and then hit enter again.

Methinks that Black Box doth be the Multiplayer Chat box........ Or something like that. It definitely is NOT the Console...

I would just like to state that I am having the exactly same problem, I've tried writing some different things in the box but it won't go away. You wrote something about how it might be an Multiplayer Chatbox, would there be any way to remove the chatbox by changing the ini file? (If it really is an chatbox). I'm not planning on playing it online so it woulden't bother me.

All help is appreciated.

Another note: THere was a thread over on the Bioware Forums that told how to remove the black box......

Thanks for that, That box was driving me crazy. Really, the only black box I ever want to see is the one I'll be hugging whilst sobbing like a schoolgirl if I'm ever in a planecrash :P

Its so nice to actually be able to read the history box again. Thankyou.
