Noob rant

Ok, so, I've played approximately a million hours of BG, BGII SOA and TOB, and Star Wars KOTOR. Figured I'd be able to jump into NWN2 without too much trouble.

But jumping Jebus, for the life of me, I cannot get into this stupid game.

First, it has the worst camera control of any game I've ever played. Jerky, not at all intuitive, can't scan an area with any ease, trees/rafters etc keep blocking LOS . . . awful.

Second, I can't even get through the stupid tutorial. Playing a Rogue, right? Dex of 16, right? So why the hell don't I have any slight of hand feat during the stupid feather challenge thing?

That's about as far as I've gotten after several hours and a dozen aborted attempts to get into the game.

Any advice? I really want to get into this game - seems like an awesome story and terrific application of 3.5 ruleset . . . but I'm afraid I won't be able to get past the interface.

Help.

Have you paid any skill points into sleight of hand? I think you need at least 1 point in this department to pickpocket the feather. For characters who don't have that skill, there is an option to recruit a child rogue by the name of Kipp. He should be standing near Tarmas.

As for the game interface, i suppose it takes some getting used to. Personally, it didn't bother me much. I used the free camera mode most of the time... that was the most convenient by far, IMHO.

For the camera, if you do find your view blocked, just hold x and it puts it into free view, so you can then change the camera angle slightly and/or have a look around. Also, make extensive use of the pause button, makes life easier for when the camera angle is poor.

Noob rant

i agree, i've been playing video games since packman was new, and this is got to be the most frustrating game i've ever played. I've spent more time being frustrated than having fun. It's really to bad, the game concept is awesome but the programming makes it one of the worst games ive ever played, i was really looking forward to playing this too, I've played all the others and enjoyed them and was excited about this one till I started playing. maybe the next one will be better and not have so many glitches and bugs, no amount of patching is going to fix this game.

Ok, so I have to recant my rant somewhat.

I've made it to the NW docks district, so have gotten into the game more than I thought I would.

But one thing that really drives me crazy still is the inability to use the minimap to navigate/give directions.

One of the handiest things in the BG series was being able to click on the minimap, have the camera go instantly to that location, then click on your character's desired destination, then sit back and watch him make his way there via the shortest route.

Far, far easier than scooting your character around an unfamilar city map a few feet at a time, trying to figure out which streets go where, etc.

But apart from that, I retract most of my earlier rant

The rant is still valid though - the designers took *way* to many liberties assuming that all players would be well versed in D&D 3.5 rules, and the nuances to camera control operation.

I personally hated the OC for NWN *1*, but the little tutorial at the beginning was substantially better than the one for this game.

For the most part though you do NOT want to be able to "auto-move" your character, doing so will often push you past "events" and often pick-up a trail of opponents that can quickly turn into a mob at your destination.

I *so* wish they had Temple of Elemental Evil's turn-based system (..at least as a "toggle on/off" feature). That way you could "auto-move" and if you were engaged by an opponent it would then "drop-into" the turn based attack system - among other things it would preclude most of the "pile-up" mob problems.
