Alchemy problem (possibly minor spoilers)

A friend of mine said that one could convert 2 lower essences to a higher essence at an alchemy workbench. Unless I am doing something drastically wrong (I'm putting 2 equivalent essences, in this case, 2 glowing fire, and using the mortar and pestle on the alchemy bench) and all I get is a "This is not a valid recipe" speech.

Is there some way to convert lower essences into higher ones? If not, how does one attain the really good Radiant essences? I have plenty of the others, but dammit, I want things like robes of the archmagi and stuff :P

Never heard of being able to do that.

What point are you at in the game? You do eventually get the radiant essences (ie. Fire Giant Heads can be... mixed? mushed? ground down? what is done to them anyway?... into Radiant Fire Essences).

I'm right before Aravhn. I wanted to get some nice stuff for my new person, and before I embarked on this whole "attract the notice of the King of Shadows" business.

I've never heard of being able to put two lower level to get one higher level essence. I have seen that you can take a higher level essence and use the mortar and pestle to create a lower level essence. And you don't even have to put it on the workbench, you can crush it right in your inventory.

Yes, but why would I want to do that, given how many of the faint and weak essences that you stumble across? :P

Should work just like you described. I've done it before many times. It could be broken in some versions. Also, I don't believe I ever upgraded all the way to Radiant.

Try making sure it also doesnt work on to weak esences. Then, try splitting the two esences into seperate inventory slots and putting them on the alchemy bench one at a time.

Oh yeah, just remembered. You have to have a certain level of craft alchemy depending on the strength of the escenses. If yours is low have someone else do it, and cast some heroism if you still have problems.

look at bioware forums, there someone posted a "protip" about it. i hear it is possible but i too can't get it to work. tried everything and my... alchimist has her skill at 17 or something and it still doesn't merge two faint essences into one weak. the version i was at was 1.00, what is the version you(snipercorn) were able to do it in?

EDIT: ok, i upgraded my nwn, and i think this type of alchemy manipulation is enabeled in all the patches that are not 1.00. ofcourse, the later patches are as buggy as a bee hive, but that's for another thread.
