I was just wondering how the number of characters we create using the party customization system would impact the number of party members as a whole. Will we be limited in bringing NPC cohorts into our group by directly creating more than one character? Or will we be able to acquire a set number of companions regardless of how many characters we choose to create, and merely have a wider pool from which to select our "active" party?

AFAIS it doesn't make any difference at all - though you should bear in mind I haven't played it much yet. I made my party - max number - and set off (cursing what they've done to the camera controls along the way).

What happens is you speak to people who will argree to become cohorts and you can swap them in and out at an inn just like you did in the OC. The unused companions wait in the inn. Whether the original number in your party makes a difference to the number of cohorts you can have, I'm not sure but you can only have one cohort near the beginning. Maybe that's not much help...
Spoilered just in case.
