| | | Test Server Stories Lets have some stories from the Argyle Test Server...
I'm interested to hear how the people are making out. I've had 15 characters so far, and none have made it past level 1. Also, I've lost several to bad DMing/RPing. I just had a bad experience, but I've already complained on the Argyle forums.
So, lets hear some stories.

| | Well ... to stay alive:
1. don't go anywhere dangerous alone and ...
2. don't go anyhwere dangerous alone
As for your bad experience, I think you were unlucky as I had a lot of good experiences. So, just try again.

| | I have been playing for a few months now and have been having a great time in general.
Since the last character wipe (about 4 weeks ago) I have played around 12 characters. Three of them are still alive and well. The key is to get to second level - and then you have much less chance of dying. To do this you must have a ranged attack capability. This will keep you out of the fray and you will be less likely to die from a single hit. The other key is, as Mysteria mentioned, to adventure in groups - that way others can heal you and stabilize you if you fall.
I have found it easier in general to play a cleric or druid - because of their healing spells. With healing potions at 50gp and no medical kits the extra healing spells are helpful early on. Also the druids animal companion can be used as a meat shield - although this is bad rp in my view - if used too much.
My current alive chars are a level 3 elf fighter, a level 2 cleric/monk. and a level 1 rogue.
The best fun I have had lately on the server is when a large group (around 10) of us got together to take on the goblin mines. This area has become significantly tougher with the last reload. We got into the mines pretty far - when we got to the room with the big door near the end we had problems. My elf fighter opened the door and set off a "slow trap" and was immediatly peppered with arrows. I retreated as I was a sitting duck and the rest of the group attacked. Within 15 seconds three chars were on the gound bleeding and the rest of us were in full retreat. I was still slowed - so I headed for the nearest room and closed the door behind me hoping that I would not be followed. The rest of the group made several attempts to rescue the bleeding chars and the slow affect wore off and I went back into the battle to help out. We were able to save all but one of the chars and win the battle in the end. This whole sequence took about 10 minutes real time and was the largest and bloodiest battle that I have yet experienced.
Xyx was on as DM at the time and made sure that the full force of goblins attacked in concert - we were unable to "draw out" small groups at time - this makes the battle significantly tougher and more realistic - the sounds of battle should travel and alert others - unlike in the single player or any non-dmed game where AI exploits work. That is one of the best things about a DMed game - better challenges make the rewards much more fullfilling. By the way Xyx took a screen shot of of the beginning of the battle and its on the ruminations message board if you want to check it out. My elf is in the front on the right with his shield and long sword - just seconds before I began to run for my life.
Anyway - keep at it Gax - you need to pick your battles and travel with companions - getting that 1000 xp you need should not take more that a few hours of play - but you need to run to fight another day to have a chance.

| | | Well, travelling with Smass, and a couple others, we were doing fairly good. My elven ranger, coupled with a few other ranged companions were decimating everything quickly, with the occasionaling touch. Even in a group though, I have been unable to surpass level 1, and it is, quite frankly, frustrating. I cam close, but then I died in one shot from some uber mage, which is also quite frustrating. All I can say, is the one death player thing will take a long time to get used to, and Ithat I really hope it doesn't sour my vision of the game... again... |

| | Hey Aegis - had a great time - sorry your elf got killed - I crashed to desktop right before that battle or I would have found an in character way to warn you. Trent and I buried you in the cemetary - check it out next time you log on - your name and a few thoughts are on a tombstone in the graveyard - by coincidence your grave is right near Fazil the paladin - a character of CMs that died a while back.
As you are finding out - Argyle is a dangerous place indeed - losing a char can be frustrating - but think of all the good times you had roleplaying while he was alive - you just can't get that sense of roleplaying and true danger on any other server I have played.
Also keep in mind that it is a test server - they have done two character wipes so far and will probably do one again in the near future - any char you create for the test server will not be available for Argyle anyway.
I took a look at my character archive on the server and I have lost 17 chars since the last server wipe alone! I currently have two chars alive - Talia - who you met who is level 2 and a level 3 elf fighter. When I lose a char it bothers me for a few hours - but I get over it soon and find it fun to start over.
Anyway - had a great time - and I hope to see you and the other banshees online soon - Argyle rules!

| | | Here's one. Travelling through the temple today, with a reletivly large band, with me and Mursalin (CM) leading the way, we ended up attacking the spiders. Well, CM was unfortunate enough to be attacked over me, and was swiftly killed. We then spent the next 20 minutes trying to get 1500 gold, in order to ressurect the noble paladin that CM is. In the process, though, I was able to gain a 3rd level. |

| | | My elf Legebrin was PKed last night - first time that has happened to me believe it or not - an I have played dozens of chars and probably over a hundred and fifty hours on the server (man I an addicted).
Anyway, Leg, one of Aegis' chars, a slayer char of Balgin, a haffer, and a half orc were taking on the mines. All the chars were level 1 except me - I was level 3. We tried to draw the spiders out (foolish I know - but hey - read my last post ). We got in over our heads and fled the mines with four spiders in tow. Aegis' char died - and Balgins Dwarf slayer char got trapped behind us - with the spiders blocking the exit.
Leg decided to go back in and try to help the dwarf - after running to town to heal (damn however the jerk is that killed the potion guy). I came back fully healed and told the two other chars (half orc and haffer) to wait for me outside the mines in case I came back out in a hurry with the spiders in tow.
I mananged to kill one of them and get another to near death before I had to run myself. I got back out of the mines with about 7hps left. The half orc then decided to PK me and the haffer. I was just standing there - typing a comment in fact - when he hit me with one shot and killed me. I got to watch as he looted me and the haffer and I bled to death - he finished me off and left.
I have no quarrel with the player - his name was "I am Death", or "Deathbringer" - or some such - I have never seen the user name before - but I did want to leave my impression of the events. I was really, really, pissed - now I have died literally dozens of times for various reasons - some heroic, some foolish - but I have never been so angry while playing the game. I am proud to say that I did not do anything stupid like an OOC rant - or making a char to assassinate my killer. I just logged off and back on with a new char.
So what do you all think? - again no hard feeling towards the other player - this just bothered me a bit. I wouldn't have minded a duel of some sort - or at least a warning that I was going to be attacked. The killer waited until I was hurt - and took advantage of this knowledge to kill me. I know that this is not a violation of any rules - but man - its cheesy and downright frustrating.
Anyway - that is the end of Legebrin - the Nuetral Evil Elf - who I could never play like I intended because I just am not very a good "evil roleplayer". Call me a sap - but I just don't have the evil bug in me - if I had done what the PKer did to me to someone else - I would not have slept at all last night.
