there are many pros and cons to multiclassing depending on the race and class you choose, the levels of a specific class you have before taking new levels of another class, the overall "compatibility" of the classes you have in mind etc. etc. i suggest you read the manual the comes with the game thouroughly (sp?), taking time to scrutinize the level-up tables of each classes (esp the classes you have in mind..). once you know the abilities you gain for taking that level, and a few levels before and after for the classes u r plainning for, u will be in a better position to judge if it will "cripple" ur character, or if it is "better" to do it or not. judging from someone who can type two posts in full caps, i presume u have not done so?
if u really want a spellcaster to wade into melee.. think about using spells to boost your less than warrior melee prowess. And if the feats are not the matter, u might also want to consider paladin levels instead of a fighter, for the devine grace ability, which adds your Cha bonus to all saves..
