Stuck in SoU! Please help!

I am in the ruins in chapter II and I have just defeated the Grey Slaad and his minions protecting the portal. My Dwarven master has re-appeared and is casting spells to try and open the portal. Meanwhile, I'm looking around and I see 6 adjacent chambers with these big pillers in them. Each pillar has a button, but only one seems to do anything. The crystal ball in the portal room shows a "hidden" room.

I don't know how to get into the hidden room, nor do I know how to open the portal. Spoil me!

Ok, here's what you do. Drop a little item in front of every pillar. Then, look into the crystal ball. Then, push the button the crystal ball reveals to you. This is why you need to drop crap in front of the buttons. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to identify 'em from one another. After you push the first button, go back to the crystal ball and find out which one to push next.
