door to the room where the snow globe is requires a key that I can't find anywhere - help!!!

Is the door in the room with the gongs in the Wizard's dungeon?

If so, the gongs need to be struck in a specific order to open the door.

If you read the note that describes the battle of the wizard with the witch, you will read about some animals. The gongs make the sound of the animals. Now, if you strike the gongs in the order that the animals appear in the note, then you will unlock the door.
