Mage Hate (tm) and how to handle it as a guild?

As people have started this discussion in the Magic-wing thread I felt we should move it to it's own topic:

Thanks a lot Xyx; the last point is an interesting one - how will the Blades react to Mages? From the bio, the Academy was originally created in about 1077 - about 35 years after the appearance of the plague and the hate of the Mages. Apparently there is not much conflict internally, since there are Battle Mages in the guild; although the Guild seems to be focusing more on warriors.

Obviously there will be suspions among the members - once we have actually come together that is; will the bond of the previous members be enough for the new ones to put aside the common hate for Mages?

The period inbetween was one of unknown. No one knew each other so new ideas couldn't be founded. If the grandfather was not a member of the Blades but was, infact, an ardent mage-hater then some of that thought may have gotten through. It is an indivdual's choice...

And it's probably a good topic for a separate thread, but I think Nippy's right. It will be an individual choice. Many of us have grown up in parts of Argyle where Argyllian Mage-Hate(tm) is the norm. While the Banshees of old may have been tolerant, many of the new BotB will have the prejudices and suspicions of the cultures they grew up in. The official stance of the BotB may be tolerance, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out and how each character handles it.

I for one agree with the individual decision.
I wont play mage hate, but more like fear of mages.
My character grows up in the wilderness, with no mages around.
So he has no clue what they are.
Thus the fear part, instead of hate.

Personally, I plan on playing a character with a very open mind, but with no experience other than the negative things he's learned about mages (Shrouders) through their reputation. I'm planning on leaving that up to what happens in-game. If I adventure early on with a mage and become friends, that's great. If my only experience with mages is as villans, then I will have a hard time openly accepting other mages as fellow Blades.

Of course, my other non-BotB character will probably be involved to some extent with the Inquisition, known mage-haters. Then again, I'll probably have several characters as I go about perishing for various causes, so we'll wait and see.

My secondary character will treat mages the same as he treats half-orcs, thieves, assassins, followers of evil gods and other scum. With the odd exception, the world would be a better place without them. That's not to say he'll be slaying them on sight, just as I don't go running around town shooting drug dealers in real life.

Well, I think I'm going to play a "snobby" elf. Racist against other races, and close-minded to things (like magic). I think it will be interesting role-playing an elf that hates magic.
