| | | Mac NWN - OK so I don't know what I'm doing... So the Mac version of NWN came out and so I hastily read the manual, set up a character and headed off.
Did the prelude thing, got up to speed with most of the commands etc. Admitteedly it was quite late but I encountered a problem I can't overcome. I searched the forum threads but found no obvious discussion on it (probably a search word problem onmy part ).
How do you use the abilities. I want to use Heal on my character but can't access a command function. Can do stealth, search etc but not heal. What am I not doing?
Thanks for feedback...

| | | The Heal skill is done by using "Healing Kits" as I belive they are called.
Unless you are in combat you will do a "take 20" wich means the game will act as if you have rolled 20.
The hit points you will heal are therefore 20 + your heal ranks + the bonus on the healing kit (ie. +1, +3, +10).
If you are in combat I beliv you will roll an ordinary d20 and use that result instead of the "take 20" |

| | ...still not getting it...
Certain skills show up on the radial menu after right clicking the Quick bar slot (Parry, search, rage etc) but not heal. ? I guess it's back to the manual but it wasn't clear last night how to do it and I'm not sure it will be any better tonight.
An aside here. My great big hulking gnome barbarian ( ) and his battleaxe generally take multiple swipes and hits to down bad guys (escaped prisoners at the beginning) whereas the clumsy female cleric and her weany mace bash 'em down with a single hit. My gnomish barbarian pride is a little put out....

<snip> | As I said in my (possible cryptic) post *points up* to use the Heal skill you need to use "Healing Kits". Using these will utilize the Heal Skill.
If you can't use the Healing Kits, I would either think the game has been altered (less likely) or you are bugged (more likely)
As for the second question:
The henchmens weapons are already +1 weapons, she might also be buffed by her own spells and such things. |

| | | and just as a side point...Healing kits are items that you find or buy in the game. Without these items you can't heal anything and the healing skill increases the chance of making a sucessful healing whil in combat.....

| | Ahh. Healing "kits". I read the manual last pm and it was particularly useless on this point until I read the description of items and stuff inthe game. Then it all made sense. After equiping myself with the healing kit in the Quick slot all worked perfectly... Thanks for the input, it did help point the way...
Ahem, any ideas on how to access Listen and Spot? They don't appear in the radial menu choices. I can't imagine you have to go out and buy ears and eyeballs to carry around. Certain of these skills are just not obvious in their accessibility. Quote: Originally posted by Xandax

I could go back to the manual....but....am I right to think that you can't access NPC inventories? Can't up their AC etc. What you see is what you get?

| | | listen and spot are automatic and they are done every round I think.....
as for NPC you can't do anything at all with them except seeing what HP thay have atm and giving them healing potions.... it's really sad but you have to live with it..... that's one of the MAJOR flows of the game that I find the most ennoying but that's just my oppinion...

| | Thanks for clearing that up. Kinda what I thought but it does seem to be a blatant omission (at least after playing the BG series). Still the game is fun, even if we can't have everything we need (I'm just in Ch 1 but could REALLY do with a +4 battleaxe of haste)

| | | You can also "activate" spot/listen by going into "detect" mode, wich by default is one of the 2 first icon on your main quickbar when you start a game. |

(IIRC, for non-elves you have to be in detect mode for full strength, and otherwise its at 1/2 your skill level... Or is that detect traps, aka search?)

| | Dear All
So since ya'll were so helpful with the skills, I have a new problem.
Locked chests. WHile my half-orc NPC can smash them open after a while with his two-handed weapon, my PC can't even scratch them (weapon ineffective). I've dualed over to wizard but need another level before I can get Knock. Still that may take a while. ANy insight into why my PC can't get the job done. ..feels as if my not-so-powerful gnome barbarian is smacking the chests with an empty sock...very scary as you can imagine...
'preciate the feedback. Makes the game more fun if you can get everything to function properly (at least a fair chance of working).

| | | Gnome barabarian probably doesn't have the strength / two handed weapon damage that is required. You're probably stuck with really sucky weapons (longswords and their ilk... as two handeds... yuck!) and just can't do it. Try using better weapons / power attack.

| | Hey...that's a +1 two-handed sock...
Yes, I rather suspect it's a weapon/strength/power issue. Sucky indeed. Will have to triple and get a few thief levels to circumvent that problem and get a decent remove traps proficiency. Live and learn, huh?
