how does dye work?

i'm trying to dye my whole armor to a red color so i brought bunch of red dye. but it only turn red at a cretain part of the armor and my helmet doesnt change at all. How does the dye work? when right click to use i see like dye cloth 1 and dye cloth 2. how does this work?

There are SIX categories of materials of which a single armor can be composed of.

- Leather 1
- Leather 2
- Cloth 1
- Cloth 2
- Metal 1
- Metal 2

So if your cloth dye doesn't produce the wanted effect, then the parts that you want to have colored are made of leather or metal - so you will have to buy the appropriate dye category (metal or leather... or even both) for them.
