Withouth spoiling to much .... if you explore (and survivie) the caves, you will eventually find the reason for the "dead magic zone", and will be able to cast magic again.

If you want spoilers, highlight the following part:
Spoiler start

In one of the last rooms of the cave is a big pillar, that is responsible for the dead magic. By solving a puzzle (easy) with it, you will not only restore the ability to use magic in the caves, but you will also get an orb that should be usable to make it impossible for a target to cast aracane magic. (Although I've never used it, so am unsure about its effectiveness).

Spoiler end.

Hope this helps.

You can also just avoid it if you wish. There is nothing plot-critical down there if I remember remotely correct

I had exactly the same problem. However, once the magic problem is sorted, you can get her back. And yes, as far as I know there is nothing you actually get down there that you will need. I have one item that is special, but I haven't had to specifically use it. Yet :-). But I didn't know that before I went into the fight :-(.
