Having Trouble Choosing Between...

A Monk or a Cleric.

Back in August I played NWN up until the middle of Chapter 2 with a Ranger. I still have those saves... but it’s been so long since I've played that I don't remember any of the story, so I've decided to start over. Perhaps when I get close to Chapter 2 I will stop playing my new character and continue with my Ranger... perhaps not. Either way, I need help choosing between a Monk and a Cleric to do this. I realize that if I'm not going to play through the higher levels with this character, then the Monk would be the worst choice, but I'm working under the assumption that I might fall in love with either one of these new characters and play through to the end with them.

I like the Monk because They get an incredible amount of abilities, and save a little bit of money by not having to invest in weapons. Also, they get the most attacks at later levels, and their bare hands do incredible damage. Spell Resistance is also a nice bonus against magic users who try and whack you with their best spells. They're simple to use, and extremely effective. The problem I've heard about monks is that they are too easy or simple to play.

I like the Cleric's versatility. They are great spell swords. They get the best armor, and arguably the best spells. They are also decent fighters. There are many different ways to build and play a cleric as well. The problem I've heard with clerics, is that they have really low skill points, and of course reflex saves.

I don’t know I like both classes a lot for different reasons. I'm open to any multi-class suggestions as well, although if I play a Monk hes gotta be pure =P

So if you've played one of these classes, then perhaps you could fill me in on what you liked or didn't like about the class.. and if you've played BOTH.. then I love you because you can give me a great description about how they compare

Try playing through the Prelude with both and see how you get on!

The following may contain spoilers with regard to hirelings.

I played with a monk, a strong character when he gets to lvl 12 thereabouts. In the beginning, he needs a lot of babysitting. If you have the patience for that, the game will play by itself before you reach the end - his unarmed combat skills and magic resistance are simply amazing. To complement a monk, I used Sharwyn as a hireling, for all the nice healing magic and lock picking skills. Plus, she looks cute too.

I have not played with a cleric, but I have read it here that it's doable. Then your choice of hireling becomes crucial. If magic casting is your thing, I would strongly recommend having Daelen Redtiger by your side.

In single player mode, I believe you will get by fairly easily with either choice. It all depends on your playing style and tastes.

Cheers!
