Debug mode/Ability Score Issue

Hi everyone,

I have an issue. I imagine that it is something people have encountered before, but I tried searching here and the bioware forums and couldn't find anything. Anyway...

I just started playing the original NWN (no expansions, yet) on a Mac. I am a big BGII fan, but I like NWN so far. The only problem I have with the game is the point-buy system- I just don't like it. So, I used the debug mode to change my ability scores. I did it first thing- right after creating my character in the prelude. He is an elf rogue, and because I want to split his levels between ranger and rogue, I upped his wisdom and his charisma by 2 points each.

However, when I've completed the prelude, it won't let me move onto the beginning of Chapter 1! The game tries to load, but then says something to the effect of "Can't load module- Invalid ability scores". Then, I get sent to a multiplayer/LAN load screen where I can load a character, but it won't accept my hacked character.

Is there something else I have to do? In my frustration I edited my scores back to what they were, and Chapter 1 loaded without a problem. However, I don't want to mod my stats every time I move areas, and I also don't want a ranger w/Wisdom 8 . I can't believe that using a hack that the developers put in would make my character invalid (if so, that is awful). Can someone please tell me how to fix this? Or, if it can't be fixed, another way to alter stats that won't break my character? Thanks.

Edit- PLEASE NO SPOILERS!!! I really want to finish the game out. I played through the end of Chapter 1 about 2 years ago, but anything beyond that is new to me, so please don't spill the beans. Thanks!

Sorry if I sound like a smartass or something, but I think you'd just have to mod your stats when you load each new chapter. Meaning, only 4 times
Prelude -> Chapter 1 -> Chapter 2a -> Chapter 2b -> Chapter 3

There aren't more, right? o_O

That could be- I really don't know. Like I said, I've never played through before.

Interestingly, this isn't my first character, but this is the first time this happened. I started with a Human Rogue/Fighter, and he didn't have any problems moving from chapter 0 to chapter 1. I also made an Elvish Rogue/Fighter (as you can see, I've been experimenting to find the best dual-weilding rogue type ). The only one to encounter this issue is my Elvish Rogue/Ranger. I actually altered the stats for the original two characters more egregiously. So, I don't know if it is the Ranger level that is causing problems, or what...?

If I only have to change the stats at the beginning of a chapter then that is okay- I can handle that. However, I still would like to know what is causing the bug. I assumed it was something that people had encountered before.

Edit- FYI- not having your character load because of an ability score issue is tremendously frustrating. However, I am glad that this happened after the prelude, not later in the game because this is the kind of bug that kills all desire to continue the game. If this keeps happening, I'm really tempted to just be a Half-Orc barbarian and smash everything.

Just change the 1 to a 0 on this line in the nwn.ini file:
Single Player Enforce Legal Characters=1

or if that line isn't there, just add this line:
Single Player Enforce Legal Characters=0

Thank you so much Darzog!

I'd actually assumed that you would have to do something like that in the .ini file because of my experience w/BGII (adding the debug line was similar). However, I would have had no idea how to do it.

Thanks again!
