Difficult to say withoutknowing your style, but World of Warcraft is the currently most mainstream game out there and it is very casual friendly compared to many other MMOGs, especially the leveling parts of it. I played it for a little over a year, and it was very much fun.

The one I have enjoyed most was proberly Dark Age of Camelot (also my first one), however the game became ruined by to many (stupid) changes, so I left that.

But ask 100 people and you'll likely get 100 different answeres

I dont know which one to play, but becare as too who talk to, insome situations if you ask for help about something that maybe general knowledge to others you will be revealing you are knew to the game and some may take advantage of that if not kill you and take your stuff away...just because they can. A friend of mine warned me of that. Also try to see if anyone you know is playing that way your experience maybe a bit better.

I've played SWG on and off over the years, and as far as MMO communities go, it's pretty decent. You can't judge the SWG community from the online forums...ye gods, those forums are a troll magnet ...as most players don't post on the forums. However, for the most part players are very helpful and nice ingame, as you will see for yourself if you decide to play.

One very nice feature about SWG: PKing can only happen if you consent to it. There are two ways for players to fight each other: one is through factional (Rebel and Imperial) PvP, and the other is via Duel. You can decline a duel if you wish - you aren't forced to accept it. It's a decent compromise IMO. Some people play for the PvP element, while others don't care for it. Myself, I binge PvP. For weeks I will do nothing but PvP, then chill out for a while and stick to NPCs and critters, and quests.

That I would think goes for most MMOGs, or at least the ones I've played regularly.
The "vocal" communities, posting at forums, are often much more negative, critical and down right immature then many people you can find in the game (yet they can also be found in the game). THe reason for this is that the majority of players who are content/happy with the game rarely posts much at such forumes for various reasons (and they'll often be labled as "fanboys" if they do post)
So one should never judge a MMOG community by the vocal parts of it of a forum, but if one acts respectfull and mature ingame the likelyhood of finding similar people increases drastically.

right now i'd say:
Lineage 2 (universally known), maybe wow.
I'm currently waiting for the expected release of SWGEmu, the star wars galaxies we all liked, to play it.
